iOS 18.1 lets you hide the option to turn off AirPods noise cancellation
A new toggle in iOS 18.1’s AirPods settings lets you hide the option to turn off noise cancellation, but you’re discouraged from using it.
Installing iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1 adds a new toggle to your AirPods settings, labeled Show Off Listening Modes. When disabled, you will no longer see the Off option when switching noise cancellation modes on your AirPods.
The option to disable noise cancellation becomes unavailable in the Noise Control section of your AirPods settings and when pressing the Volume slider in the Control Center, but discourages you from using it in order to protect your hearing.
iOS 18.1 brings a toggle to hide the Off option for AirPods noise-cancellation
“When this is on, you will see the Off option in Listening Modes,” reads Apple’s description of the feature. “Your hearing is not protected when listening mode is set to Off.” In other words, Apple suggests that noise cancellation is good for your hearing by decreasing loud sounds and noise from your environment.
The company will also release other new health features that turn the AirPods Pro 2 into a clinically-grade hearing aid approved by the FDA. After taking a quick hearing test on your iPhone, iOS will create your hearing profile and use it to reduce louder, more intermittent noise when using Transparency Mode.
Another upcoming feature, Media Assist, will use your hearing profile to boost certain parts of speech or instruments within a soundtrack to improve the clarity of music, videos and even phone calls. Aside from Apple Intelligence, iOS 18.1 will bring other new features like a proper watchlist in the TV app, a toggle to reset the Control Center to factory layout and drag-and-drop in iPhone Miroring, among others.
