iOS 18.1 finally brings a proper watchlist to the Apple TV app

The iOS 18.1 software has introduced a new section dubbed Watchlist in the Apple TV app, replacing some of the functionality of your Up Next queue.

In earlier iOS versions, your Up Next queue included movies, TV shows and sports events you’d already started watching and those you planned to watch later.

However, Apple has tweaked this in the TV app on iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 by creating a new feed for videos you’ve added to your queue but haven’t begun watching. Called Watchlist, it’s located underneath the Home tab.

At the same time, the Up Next queue has been updated to only display videos you’ve started but haven’t finished watching yet.

iOS 18.1 adds a Watchlist section to the TV app

To reflect these changes, Apple has renamed the Up Next queue in the TV app as Continue Watching. This feature surfaced in the fifth beta of iOS 18.1, but it looks like more work is required to smooth out the rough edges.

Benjamin Mayo, 9to5Mac:

In its current state, the new feature does not seem to be fully implemented. For one, while Up Next has been renamed to Continue Watching, its functionality is the same as previous versions. It contains the same items, including recently added items that are now also found in the Watchlist.

Of course, this will surely change in future beats.

Similarly, the Watchlist is currently found only on the Home tab and requires scrolling several screenfuls worth of distance downwards. When the feature is finished, we would expect it be located in a more prominent position (and perhaps also linked from the Library tab).

Apple could also pull the feature in case of negative feedback and release it when it’s ready for prime time (it wouldn’t be the first time).

Apple TV+ deserves a proper watchlist

The Up Next queue has always felt a bit confusing to me. Many, if not all, streaming services provide separate lists for shows you’re in the midst of watching and those you plan on watching in the future. I’m excited about this change as it’ll make Apple TV+ more in line with its rivals like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Max, etc.

How to add and remove items from the TV app’s Up Next queue

You can add a movie, TV show or live sports event to your Up Next by hitting the “+” button in the upper-right corner of its page. To remove items from the Up Next queue, click the checkmark in the same place. Like before, Up Next syncs across devices, allowing you to easily continue watching a show on another device.

You can also touch and hold a video when browsing the app and choose Add to Up Next in the menu to add the video to the queue or In Up Next to remove it.
