iFixit has demonstrated Apple’s new iPhone 16 battery removal process in a video walkthrough, calling it “revolutionary” for repairs.
Apple has made some engineering changes to the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models in order to simplify battery removal and perform other repairs. Now, repair experts over at iFixit have demonstrated the new battery removal process in a hands-on video. Calling it “revolutionary,” iFixit has singled out three key changes that make the iPhone 16 better from a repairability standpoint.
The first is a new type of adhesive that can debond when you pass an electrical current through it. The second is a stainless steel case protecting the iPhone 16 Pro batteries. And the third is the ability to open an iPhone 16’s backside to get to the battery without removing the pricey and fragile OLED panel.

The battery has pull-tabs on older iPhones, making it more difficult to remove than necessary while risking damage or fire hazards. Pull tabs and stretch release adhesives are gone in favor of a new process that runs a low-voltage electrical current through the new ionic liquid battery adhesive. That’s all it takes for the battery to release itself from the enclosure, as iFixit’s video shows.
Apple’s press release notes the iPhone 16 lineup has been “reengineered to allow for an even larger battery and to better dissipate heat while making battery service easier.” The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro batteries are made with 100 percent recycled cobalt and over 95 percent recycled lithium, a first for the iPhone.
Apple has relaxed its service policy recently. iPhone owners can at long last calibrate a replacement battery in Settings themselves without calling Apple. This is a necessary step to make replacement third-party batteries work with iOS features such as Optimized Battery Charging and Battery Health.
