Apple subsidiary Beats by Dre wants you to know Powerbeats Pro 2 are in the works and coming sometime in 2025, six years after the first ones.

The company took to Instagram and X to tease the unannounced Powerbeats Pro 2 with a promotional video showcasing MLB star and LA Dodgers hitter Shohei Ohtani wearing a set of white earbuds. The nine-second clip was published with a message, saying “Built for Shohei Ohtani.” Beats has always used professional athletes to promote its audio products, so this is not such a surprise.

What is surprising is a revelation at the end of the video that the Powerbeats Pro 2 are coming sometime in 2025. If I had to play a guessing game, I’d say that Apple will release the Powerbeats Pro 2 as part of its spring refresh when it usually announces a new iPhone color, updated Apple Watch bands and similar accessories. By the time they drop, it will have been six years since the original model made its debut.

I was a happy Powerbeats owner

I owned the original Powerbeats earphones, released back in 2016. I was quite happy with them. They produced a decent sound and could be worn while working out, which was my thing then. By the time they fell apart, the AirPods were already booming, so I skipped the Powerbeats Pro and went straight for the AirPods.

The Powerbeats Pro version arrived in 2019, priced at $250 (review). Apple marketed them as “true wireless earphones” because they didn’t have a neckband-style wire connecting them like the standard Powerbeats did.

Other improvements included an adjustable ear hook design to ensure a secure fit and Apple’s H1 headphone chip enabling features like Hey Siri, faster device switching, longer battery life (nine hours instead of five) and Find My support. In 2020, Apple added new color options to the Powerbeats Pro lineup.
