Apple has launched iOS 17.7, iPadOS 17.7, macOS Sonoma 14.7 and macOS Ventura 13.7 with security fixes for older iPhones, iPads and Macs.

“This update provides important security fixes and is recommended for all users,” according to cryptic release notes accompanying an over-the-air update in Settings > General > Software Update on your iPhone or iPad and System Settings > General > Software Update on your Mac.

If you don’t want to update your iPhone, iPad or Mac to the latest iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia software, install the above updates to get the latest security protections. With iOS 18.0 and other annual Apple OS updates now out the door, Apple will keep releasing security updates and bug fixes for these older operating systems, but no new features will be in development going forward.

What’s new in iOS 17.7, iPadOS 17.7, macOS Sonoma 14.7 and macOS Ventura 13.7?

Apple’s page listing important security patches in its software sheds more light on the vulnerabilities the above software updates address. There are over three dozen fixes in macOS Sonoma 14.7 and macOS Ventura 13.7 and roughly half as many in iOS 17.7 and iPadOS 17.7.

Apple rarely details fixes for zero-day vulnerabilities, which have not yet been disclosed or patched. Instead, it waits a few days until most users have installed the update and gotten the latest protections before detailing its security fixes.

It doesn’t seem like the above updates fix any zero-day vulnerabilities, but they include many of the same fixes shipping with iOS 18.0, so you should install them anyway—even if you decided to pass on iOS 18.
