Apple is allegedly working on not one but two new smart accessories for the connected home, and Apple Intelligence will be central to them.

Mark Gurman wrote in his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg that Apple has been developing an operating system that could be called homeOS that will power two new smart accessories, and both will rely on Apple Intelligence.

Aside from a tabletop device combining a robotic arm and a display that would swivel and rotate to follow you around the room, there’s apparently also “a low-end smart display for using FaceTime and controlling home appliances” in the works.

According to Gurman, that device will arrive in early 2025 as “the lower-end companion to the robotic device, which may cost $1,000 or more.”

Rumor: Apple Intelligence to be central to two new Apple home accessories

Gurman reported that various Apple Intelligence tools will play a central role in both gadgets. Just don’t count on Apple Intelligence to come to the current versions of the Apple TV, HomePod and HomePod mini, the author writes, because those devices lack the oomph to run on-device AI models.

Both of the new products are considered collaborations between Apple’s artificial intelligence and home device hardware engineering groups. The low-end smart display is designed to run apps like Calendar, Notes and Home, and will include an interface optimized for controlling home appliances and quickly seeing information. When developing prototypes, Apple imagined the device magnetically attaching to walls or sitting atop a desk.

Gurman alleges that the tvOS operating system which powers the Apple TV, HomePod and HomePod mini will be “the basis for homeOS.” He went on to speculate that Apple might merge tvOS and homeOS down the line into a single operating system that would power every Apple home device.
