Apple announces September 16 release date for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15 Sequoia, watchOS 11 and tvOS 18
Apple has announced the September 16 release date for its iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15 Sequoia, watchOS 11 and tvOS 18 software updates.
Apple previewed the latest features and technologies coming to its software platforms this fall at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The company has been testing iOS 18, macOS 15 Sequoia and other upcoming updates with its registered developers and public beta testers throughout the summer.
Apple rarely releases these big updates all at once. This time, however, iOS 18.0, iPadOS 18.0, macOS 15.0 Sequoia, watchOS 11.0 and tvOS 18.0 will arrive on Monday, September 16, but they won’t bring any Apple Intelligence features.
Instead, Apple Intelligence is scheduled to arrive alongside iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1 Sequoia in October (the iPhone 16 will have the initial batch of Apple Intelligence features preinstalled when it drops on September 20).
Why is Apple releasing all the updates at once?
Apple held its “Glowtime” event yesterday to unveil two new AirPod 4 models, the iPhone 16 lineup, the Apple Watch Series 10 and more. Following the keynote, Apple refreshed the “coming this fall” label on the iOS 18 Preview page and other pages on its website with the September 16 launch date.
This is a notable departure from how Apple previously spread out these OS releases, with iOS and watchOS (sometimes iPadOS and tvOS as well) typically coming in September and macOS following a month later in October. But things are very different this time around because of AI. Companies now feel a palpable urgency to release the latest AI features to dazzle consumers, and Apple is no exception.
When will Apple Intelligence be available?
Next month, Apple Intelligence will arrive in beta alongside iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1 Sequoia. Features like Writing Tools will be initially restricted to US English language users. Others like Image Playground, Genmoji, ChatGPT integration and more will be available over the course of next year.
The system requirements for Apple Intelligence are pretty tight. You need a Mac or iPad powered by the Apple silicon M1 chip or later or an iPhone powered by the A17 Pro chip (iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max) or newer.
