Where are new AirPods? Two AirPods 4 models allegedly coming this fall
Apple is still expected to advance the regular AirPods by releasing two new AirPods 4 models this fall, an entry-level and a mid-tier model.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman predicted last year that Apple would release two fourth-generation AirPods models in 2024, one aimed at the mid-tier and the other an entry-level model rocking an updated design providing enhanced fit, improved sound quality and USB-C charging, among other expected changes.
Gurman reiterated in the latest subscriber-only version of his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg that Apple is on track to release two AirPods 4 models this fall.
Rumor: Two AirPods 4 models coming this fall
Apple currently offers two AirPods versions, the $129 second-generation model, released in March 2019, and the $169 third-generation model, released in October 2021. For the $40 difference, AirPods 3 bing perks like an extra hour of listening time, a redesigned case, an IPX4 sweat and water resistance rating, personalized spatial audio with dynamic head tracking and adaptive EQ. When AirPods 4 drop, the current second and third-generation models should be pulled from sale.
The most recent AirPods update happened in September 2023, when Apple refreshed the second-generation AirPods Pro 2 with a USB-C charging case, an updated H2 chip bringing lossless audio support and other improvements. Gurman says the next AirPods Pro refresh in 2025 will bring an updated design along with a faster chip powering enhanced audio capabilities.
Are the AirPods Max still on Apple’s roadmap?
Gurman said earlier this year that the flagship AirPods Max over-ear headphones would get a refresh in 2024 but didn’t mention them in the latest newsletter. The AirPods Max were released in 20020 and are way overdue for a refresh. The headphones use Apple’s outdated H1 chip, which doesn’t support iOS 17’s adaptive audio features or any of the upcoming AirPods features in iOS 18.
Now, Gurman has predicted that the next AirPods Max would bring “an updated chip” to support the latest audio enhancements in iOS. On the other hand, a sketchy rumor suggested that the next model would only get USB-C charging, design tweaks and no new chip, which doesn’t seem probable given that the AirPods Max still runs the same old chip from four years ago.
