The rumored 12GB RAM boost could be exclusive to the flagship iPhone 17 Pro Max
According to a reliable analyst, only the flagship iPhone 17 Pro Max will have 12GB of RAM while all the other models in the 2025 lineup will still have 8GB.
A pretty reliable leaker said yesterday that next year’s iPhone 17 models will feature 12GB of RAM, which could enable them to run more generative AI features locally on-device. Reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo chimed in today with new details, saying only the flagship iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature 12GB of RAM.
“Enhanced on-device AI capabilities will likely be a major selling point for the iPhone 17 Pro Max,” he wrote on X. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 17, a rumored new mid-range “iPhone Slim” model and the next iPhone SE will all have 8GB of RAM.
The priciest iPhone Pro 15 Max accounts for nearly 40 percent of new model shipments, Kuo says, making the most significant contribution to Apple’s bottom line. He expects the company to continue differentiating the iPhone Pro Max with the best specifications. He added that a vapor chamber and graphite sheets for better thermal management will also be points of differentiation for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Rumor: Only the iPhone 17 Pro Max will have 12GB of RAM
Apple is expected to boost the RAM on this year’s standard iPhone 16 modes and the iPhone 16 Pros to 8GB because Apple Intelligence requires 8GB of RAM. This is also why only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max can run Apple Intelligence; the standard iPhone 15 models only have 6GB of RAM.
If Kuo is correct, the RAM will continue to be among the points of differentiation for the iPhone Pros. But I’m not entirely convinced that the rumored 12GB of RAM on the iPhone 17 Pro Max is strictly about Apple Intelligence. Look no further than the iPhone 7 Plus, Apple’s first phone equipped with 3GB of RAM, more than any previous iPhone. The extra RAM was required to accommodate Portrait Mode processing (the iPhone 7 Plus was the first model to ship with two rear cameras).
Photography improvements could be the real reason for 2025’s RAM upgrade, as the iPhone 17 Pro Max is rumored to bring a 48-megapixel triple camera system. Only the main rear camera currently has 48 megapixels, while the telephoto and ultra-wide cameras still have 12 megapixels.
