The plastic Apple Watch SE in bright, bold colors would appeal to kids ideally

If the next Apple Watch SE really ditches aluminum for plastics, then it might come in much more interesting colors that would especially appeal to kids.

Mark Gurman recently alleged that a future Apple Watch SE would use plastics for the case instead of aluminum, resulting in a lighter watch that should be cheaper to produce. Gurman provided more details in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, writing that using plastic instead of aluminum should make the device “more kid-friendly.” He also speculated the material could “allow for a better array of colors” compared with the current lineup.

The Apple Watch SE could have its iPhone 5c moment

The Apple Watch SE, currently in its second generation, is already competitively priced at $250, but I’m not necessarily betting on an even lower price. I doubt Apple will pass on any savings from using a cheaper material to the consumer. If anything, lower costs will boost Apple’s margins. This seems purely about the looks.
I’m not saying lower pricing wouldn’t help; it would. With the right price, parents will more easily rationalize buying a watch for their kids. However, if the unapologetically plastic iPhone 5c (2013) taught us anything, colors matter. The Apple Watch SE offers an excellent value for money, but its Silver, Midnight and Starlight color options leave much to be desired. I consider those colorways to be dull, without a trace of excitement or liveliness in their muted palette. The Apple Watch SE looks too serious for kids, but a colorful appearance would appeal to that demographic ideally.

Apple’s experiments with color

Apple seems to have adjusted its design language recently by experimenting with color. The idea seems to be to make pro-branded devices in dull colors while reserving oranges, greens, yellows, reds and the like for consumer devices.

Its iMac all-in-one desktop offers eye-catching color options. Ditto for standard iPhones. The consumer-focused MacBook Air doesn’t come in bright colors, but at least those who can’t Silver and Space Gray can opt for gold-like Starlight or the dramatic Space Gray.

But Apple devices prefixed with “Pro” in their marketing name come in unexciting colors. The muted color scheme of the iPhone Pros is an excellent example of that. On the Mac side, the MacBook Pro is available in the standard Silver and Space Gray options, and pro-branded desktops like the Mac Pro and Mac Studio are Silver-only.
