Rumor: There won’t be an M4 MacBook Air this year

According to a new report, the wait for an M4 processor upgrade to Apple’s MacBook Air laptop could be longer than some have anticipated.

The introduction of Apple’s first OLED-based iPad Pros in May was a surprise because no one expected a new-generation Apple silicon chip to debut in an iPad instead of a Mac. Some folks even wondered whether Apple was purposefully holding back its other devices to give the iPad Pro a CPU advantage. But don’t worry, M4 upgrades are coming to the entire Mac lineup this and next year.

Mark Gurman wrote on Bloomberg that Apple will upgrade the MacBook Pro laptop and the Mac mini, its most affordable desktop computer, to the M4 chip later in 2024. He didn’t give a more exact timeframe for the launch, so I will—expect these machines in October when Apple usually holds its other fall event following a new iPhone launch in September.

When will the MacBook Air get Apple M4?

The MacBook Air, Apple’s best-selling laptop, was updated with the M3 chip and a new 15-inch model in March, so it won’t receive another refresh until 2025. Neither will the Mac Pro and Mac Studio workstations.

Gurman said earlier the Mac Pro would skip the M3 and go straight for the M4 in 2025. He said an M4-equipped Mac Pro will support 512GB of unified memory versus the current M2 Ultra-powered Mac Pro, which supports up to 192GB.

He also said the M4 will branch out into three separate chips in 2025, codenamed Donan (baseline), Brava (mid-tier), and Hidra (flagship). He predicted an M4 Mac Pro would arrive “later in 2025,” which could easily be codeword for a fall launch.
