Rumor: The rumored ultra-slim “iPhone Air” won’t get Pro specs until 2027

Apple is working on a cool new so-called iPhone Air whose #1 selling point should be thinness, but it likely won’t get Pro-grade specs until 2027.

Apple is rumored to be focused on developing the thinnest smartphones, tablets and computers in the industry to infuse its products with Jony Ive-era excitement, and an ultra-thin iPhone is said to be first out of the gate. But “iPhone Slim,” “iPhone Air” or whatever you want to call it won’t become Apple’s new flagship model in terms of hardware specifications, at least not until 2027 at the earliest.

A source recently claimed this device would sport an A19 chip with 8GB of RAM, an aluminum chassis and a 6.5-inch display. And now, Mark Gurman has shared his expectations in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter on Bloomberg.

Whatever it may be called, an ultra-thin appearance should be the defining feature of such a device (leaker Ice Universe recently said the device will be just 5mm thin versus the iPhone 15 Pro Max with its 8.5mm profile). And now, Gurman writes that such a device should appeal to people looking to stand out from the crowd with a fresh new design, unlike the same rehashed iPhones we’ve been served for the past five years since the iPhone X’s major redesign in 2017.

The sales pitch will probably go like this: If you want something snazzier than a standard iPhone—but don’t really need the performance, screen size or cameras of a Pro model—you can get something that looks much cooler while still having the specifications of a regular iPhone.

But this slimmer iPhone will just be a step toward “something better,” he hinted. In other words, this year’s iPhones will hardly make people notice you’ve upgraded because they’ll look largely the same as the iPhone 15 lineup, save for the slightly bigger screens and a new Capture button on the Pro models, refreshed colors (including a rose gold option) and updated Apple processors.

Eventually, Apple will want to squeeze the power of a Pro model into this smaller design. That feat will likely take until at least 2027 to achieve. I also expect Apple to produce a foldable iPhone, but all signs internally point to a foldable iPad being just as big of a priority. That means we may still see a tablet version come sooner.

Gurman also reiterated his earlier predictions, calling for a major Mac mini redesign that would shrink it down to roughly the Apple TV size, the iPhone SE finally getting an OLED display with minimal bezels around the first quarter of 2025, a revamped Apple Watch SE with plastic cases that could appeal to kids, and more.
