Apple is making some changes to the structure of its App Store group to better align with regulatory changes in the EU.

According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Matt Fischer, Apple’s longtime vice president for the App Store, is set to leave the company soon. At the same time, Tim Cook and App Store‌ boss Phil Schiller have reportedly decided to introduce further changes to align the company better with the changes it was forced to make in the European Union as part of its compliance with the bloc’s Digital Markets Act.

The App Store will be split into two teams, one tasked with running the store, like before, and the other focused on alternative means of app distribution like sideloading, third-party app stores and alternative payment methods.

Rumor: The App Store group split into two teams

“Matt Fischer, a vice president who has run the App Store business since 2010, is leaving Apple in October, according to people with knowledge of the matter, who declined to be identified because the changes haven’t been announced,” Gurman wrote. “The App Store group is being split into two teams: one overseeing Apple’s own store and another responsible for alternative app distribution.”

It doesn’t sound like the change will affect Apple owners. The App Store is a jewel in Apple’s crown and one of the most lucrative segments of the company, contributing the most to the services division and directly affecting Apple’s bottom line.

Fischer joined Apple in 2003 as iTunes marketing chief before being promoted to vice president of the ‌App Store‌ in 2010. Gurman writes that the current senior director of the App Store, Carson Oliver, will oversee the store. In contrast, App Store director Ann Thai will lead the team in charge of alternative app distribution.
