Release notes for watchOS 10.6.1 reveal the software update fixes a bug that could make the Fitness+ service inaccessible on your Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch comes with the preinstalled Fitness app, previously called Activity. If you subscribe to Apple Fitness+, you can start Fitness+ workouts from the watch’s Fitness app. Turns out some people have been complaining about a bug in the watchOS software preventing them from accessing the Apple Fitness+ service, but watchOS 10.6 has squished it.

To install an over-the-air update, go to Settings → General → Software Update on your watch or launch the companion Watch app on your iPhone, select the My Watch tab and navigate to General → Software Update. Your watch must have at least 50 percent battery and be placed on a charger for the update to install.

Release notes: What’s new in watchOS 10.6.1?

Apple released watchOS 10.6 on August 19, 2024, with the build number 21U580. “This update provides important bug fixes and security updates and is recommended for all users,” according to the watchOS 10.6 release notes.

Fitness+ is available on the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. You can stream video workouts from any device to an AirPlay-compatible smart TV and a Mac. If you wear an Apple Watch, the interface will display your live heart rate and calories burned.

Looks like both watchOS 10.6 and tvOS 17.6.1 also include important security patches because they’re listed on Apple’s page detailing security releases. However, details are missing and there are no published CVE entries, suggesting these updates probably patch undisclosed zero-day vulnerabilities.

The iPhone maker also today launched the new tvOS 17.6.1 update (build number 21M80) with bug fixes and re-released the iOS 17.6.1 and iPadOS 17.6.1 updates, which dropped on August 7 with a fix Advanced Data Protection not toggling.

Both iOS and iPadOS 17.6.1 have been re-released with the new build number 21G101. However, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, which also dropped alongside iOS 17.6.1 and iPadOS 17.6.1, has not been re-released today.
