Residents of Tokyo, Japan, can now use public transportation with real-time transit information, including delays, displayed by Apple Maps right on their iPhones.

Navigating the complex traffic in Tokyo, Japan’s busy capital with nearly 14 million people, just got a lot easier for Apple customers thanks to support for real-time transit information for the city in the Maps app.

The announcement in the Apple Newsroom notes that real-time traffic information is available for more than 20 railways, buses and streetcar lines in the metropolitan area, including other institutions that provide services through JR East, Tokyo Metro and ODPT (Public Transportation Open Data Council).

Apple Maps real-time transit info now available in Tokyo

Detailed timetables are shown in the Maps app, refreshed in real-time so you always know up-to-date departure and arrival times and route transfers. More importantly, any delays are reflected in the Maps app, saving you time.

This is a silent server update, so no software update is required to use the new feature. Simply open the Maps app on your iPhone, invoke navigation and switch to transit directions from your default mode of travel (or ask Siri for transit directions).

Apple Maps is now available on the web, but the web edition doesn’t support using transit routes yet. To check whether Apple Maps transit directions are available for your area, visit Apple’s iOS and iPadOS Feature Availability page.

iOS 18’s topographic maps in the US and Japan

Japanese customers will be among the first Apple users to receive the new topographic maps feature when iOS 18 launches this fall. Apple notes that users across Japan will be able to explore “beautiful topographic maps with contours, undulating shadows, hiking trails, etc., on their iPhones.” In the US, topographic maps include detailed trail networks and hikes, including all 63 national parks.
