We made it everyone! It’s the weekend again! And that means it’s time for another Apps of the Week roundup. This week we have some great picks for you, including a spunky new calendar app, a versatile Mastodon client, and an app for securely storing important documents. And as always, we’ve selected a fun game for you to check out.

Outside: Calendar Countdowns

Is your current calendar app too boring? Why not give it a shot of Diet Coke and Pop Rocks with Outside? It’s a new type of calendar that features countdowns to your events, helping you ramp up the hype and excitement. OMG 11 days until Sarah’s birthday! 7 days until the mold guy comes! You know, normal calendar stuff. Anyway, you get everything you’d expect in a normal calendar app—syncing with Apple and Google, shared calendars, reminders, and unlimited widgets. You also get an AI planner and private group chat. Some things are exclusive to the app’s Premium subscription service, but hey, who isn’t doing that these days?

Pipilo

What a great name. Pipilo. I’ve been saying it all afternoon in kind of like an Italian or Easter European accent: Pa-PILL-yo. Anyway, it’s a Fediverse app that lets you browse through posts on a horizontally scrolling timeline. It works with Mastodon, Catodon, Iceshrimp, FireFish—okay, wait, are these real things? Mastodon I’ve obviously heard of, but some of these others sound wild. The point is the app is very universal, and its mix of clean threads, quick search, and smooth media viewer make it ideal for browsing your favorite Fediverse social network. It’s all very IRC-ish to me, which sounds like a fun weekend project!

Folio: Digital Wallet App

On a more serious, professional note, let’s talk about Folio. This app has been around for a while (I’m surprised we hadn’t mentioned it before), and it gives you a secure way to store important documents so you don’t ever have to worry about losing them. We’re talking about scans of your driver’s license, insurance cards, debit and credit cards, library cards, Subway free sandwich cards, birth certificates, and the piece of paper that says ‘Billy’s Soul’ that you purchased from Billy Ripken back in the 7th grade. Seriously, though, each document just needs one quick scan and it’s in; they are individually encrypted, easy to share, and you will even get alerts when a card is about to expire.

Pinball Wizard

The name Pinball Wizard is so ambiguous. Are you a person that is just really good at playing pinball? Are you an actual wizard who is shaped like a pinball? Turns out, it’s the latter. This is an arcade adventure game where the main character is propelled into action by a set of flippers, like a ball in a… pinball machine. Each level of the game is a contained area inside a tower, and the goal is to survive and make your way to the top. There’s a Tower mode and a Dungeon mode, and you can unlock and upgrade 16 different skills. There’s also a new randomized dungeon to play through daily. It’s worth noting that this was a popular Apple Arcade game for a long time, but now it’s on the App Store for free, no adds or IAPs.
