macOS Sequoia will annoy you with weekly screen recording permission popups

macOS Sequoia will show a weekly permission prompt for each screen recording app, though other types of apps could also be affected.

Apple is making this change to discourage developers of screen-recording and screenshotting apps from using obsolete APIs and embrace the current ones.

As AppleInsider points out, all sorts of apps that leverage screen recording functionality in unordinary ways could be affected by this change, such as Keyboard Maestro and Bartender. Even apps that use color pickers seem to trigger the popup. “Then, too, all video conferencing apps use screen recording when users turn on screen sharing during calls,” AppleInsider writes.

macOS Sequoia brings weekly permission prompts for screen recording and screenshot apps

The warning message that pops on the screen after a week informs you that the app in question can access your screen and audio. You can click Continue to Allow if you’re fine with this or Open System Settings to revoke the screen recording permission. The prompt also appears when opening an app after a restart. This policy applies even if you’ve manually turned on screen-recording permission in System Settings for an app.

This is not a bug; some developers say Apple has confirmed the popup is a new security feature. John Gruber commented on his Daring Fireball blog, “Having to click through these confirmation nags every week, for every such utility you use, is not a little thing at all. IIt’sthe sort of thing companies do when decisions like this are made by people looking to cover their asses, not make insanely great products.”

A Reddit user explains that “notifications once a week per app that can access your screen, when the current APIs are used is apparently the new behavior,” but that doesn’t make it any less annoying. Look, I’m fine with weekly reminders that an app I may no longer use still has screen-recording privileges. But I would definitely pull my hair if this affected apps like Bartender or Keyboard Maestro which don’t even expose screen-recording functionality to the user.

What is ScreenCaptureKit?

Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit framework brings developers an official way to add support for high-performance frame capture of screen and audio content to their apps. On macOS Sequoia, ScreenCaptureKit supports capturing HDR content, microphone capture, and straight-to-file recording.

macOS Sequoia tightens up the Mac security with new controversial features, including ditching the Control-click Gatekeeper override for unsigned apps because malware creators have exploited this shortcut to fool users into installing fake security apps. Another one blocks the 0.0.0.0 IP address hackers have exploited for years to access local company servers.
