The third beta of iOS 18.1 adds two new Apple Intelligence features that were unavailable in prior betas, including a Clean Up tool in the Photos app.

Today, Apple released the third beta of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1 with two new Apple Intelligence features. We already saw AI writing tools and the new Siri glowing animation in earlier iOS 18.1 betas. And now, the Clean Up feature in Photos is live in the third beta of iOS 18.1, along with AI-powered notification summaries on the Lock Screen from all apps.

The inaugural iOS 18.0 version in September won’t have any Apple Intelligence features. Instead, they’ll arrive alongside iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1.

iOS 18.1 beta 3: The Clean Up tool in Photos

With Clean Up, you can easily remove distractions in a photo’s background without accidentally altering the subject. Just hit the Clean Up button next to the Crop tool when editing an image in Photos, then circle an object in the background that you wish to remove, like a friend who photo-bombed your snap. Generative AI will identify the correct shape, remove the content and fill in the blank areas.

If you’ve ever used content-aware fill and AI background-removal tools in Adobe Photoshop or Pixelmator, you’ll feel right at home. Apple’s feature isn’t as drastic as Google’s new Reimagine feature on the latest Pixel phones that lets you select an object like a lake in a photo’s background and have it replaced with an entirely AI-generated content generated from a prompt, such as a field of daffodils.

iOS 18.1 beta 3: Notification summaries for all apps

Your iPhone already has a notification summarization feature in Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary, but it’s pretty basic. You can cherry-pick which apps will contribute to a notification summary and create a schedule, but that’s pretty much it. The summary is personalized to you and ordered by priority based on how you use your apps, with the most relevant notifications at the top.

iOS 18 will use the power of AI to take notification summarization to the next level, thanks to Apple Intelligence’s deep understanding of language. Only key information is surfaced on the Lock Screen, which saves you from having to scroll through stacked notifications in order to get to the important bits.

“Priority Notifications appear at the top of the stack to surface what’s most important, and summaries help users scan long or stacked notifications to show key details right on the Lock Screen, such as when a group chat is particularly active,” Apple explains. Earlier betas only summarized Messages and Mail notifications.

Beta 3 extends these summaries to all apps, including third-party ones (it uses on-device processing, with no internet connection required). You can toggle summaries for individual apps in Settings ⇾ Notifications ⇾ Summarize Previews. And with a new Focus mode, dubbed Reduce Interruptions, you can filter out everything but crucial actionable alerts, such as a text about an early pickup from daycare.
