What happens when your Apple Watch is in Low Power Mode

These features are turned off on your Apple Watch when you activate Low Power Mode:

Furthermore, enabling Low Power Mode disables the following on your Apple Watch when it is away from your iPhone and not connected to it:

  • Incoming phone calls and notifications (your Apple Watch will fetch and show you missed phone calls and notifications once every hour when in Low Power Mode)
  • Wi-Fi and cellular data connections, however, your Apple Watch will turn on Wi-Fi or cellular data during Low Power Mode if you open a watchOS app that needs the Internet.

Note: Phone calls, notifications, and the Internet will work on the Apple Watch even in Low Power Mode if it’s connected to your iPhone.

In addition to the above points, Low Power Mode also leads to the following:

  • Reduces screen refresh rate because of which animations and scrolling may appear less smooth
  • Complications on your watch face update less frequently
  • Background app refresh happens less frequently
  • Making phone calls and using Siri can take more time

Turn on Low Power Mode automatically during workouts

Low Power Mode during workout can help your watch battery consume less power while continuing to measure important metrics like your pace and heart rate.

You can set your Apple Watch to automatically turn on Low Power Mode when you start a workout and turn it off after you end the workout.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Workout.
  3. Turn on the switch for Low Power Mode.

You can also turn it on from the Watch app > Workout > Low Power Mode.

Tip: If you have an Apple Watch Ultra, SE (2nd generation), or Series 8 and newer, you can go to Settings > Workout and turn on Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings to preserve battery when you are walking outdoors, running, or hiking.

Turn off Low Power Mode on your Apple Watch

You can disable Low Power Mode the same way you turned it on from Control Center, Settings app, or by asking Siri.

In addition to that, Low Power Mode turns off automatically when you put your Apple Watch in charging and it goes past 80%. However, Low Power Mode won’t turn off automatically if you had enabled it from Control Center for 1, 2, or 3 days.

The difference between Power Reserve Mode and Low Power Mode

Power Reserve Mode on Apple Watch turns off every feature, including the screen. All you can do in Power Reserve Mode is see the time by pressing the Digital Crown once.

You get the option to turn on Power Reserve Mode when you tap the battery percentage button in Control Center on Apple Watch running watchOS 8 and earlier. But, this has been replaced by Low Power Mode on watchOS 9 and later. As a result, there is no way to turn on Power Reserve Mode on your Apple Watch manually. However, you can still see the time by pressing the Digital Crown even when your Apple Watch is off or if it has turned off automatically because it almost ran out of battery.
