Apple’s recent iOS 17.6 update apparently re-enables the Home Switching option in the Home app even if you’ve turned it off. Here’s what to do if you’re in that boat.

It’s unclear whether this is true for iPadOS 17.6 and macOS Sonoma 14.6. The error can be easily fixed by re-enabling the setting. You don’t need to worry about this unless you’ve configured multiple homes in the Home app.

Apple launched iOS 17.6 on July 30, 2024, to patch dozens of security vulnerabilities. For some, however, it turns the Home Switching option in the Home app back on. If you had turned it on before installing the update because you prefer to manually switch between your smart homes, check your settings again.

How to disable automatic home switching in the Home app

The Home app turns on the Home Switching option by default when you add more than one home. That’s probably why iOS 17.6’s Home app re-enables the option, but not respecting user choice is clearly a bug.

If you had disabled the Home Switching option and it’s back on after installing iOS 17.6, fire up the Home app, select the Home tab, touch the … (ellipsis) menu in the top-right corner and choose Home Settings from the menu. Next, touch the Homes button in the top-left corner and turn off the Home Switching toggle.

To add a home to the Home app on an iPhone, iPad, and Mac, hit the + (plus) button and choose Add New Home. Your homes can be in different physical locations, and you can switch between them easily via the … (ellipsis) menu.

Home changes in iOS 18

Apple’s software platform for the connected home will gain additional capabilities this fall that lay the groundwork for several new features in the Home app,. including guest access, electricity usage at a glance, hands-free door unlocking and support for robot vacuum cleaners.

Robot is already out of the gate with a Matter-enabled Roomba, which can wash its own mop. This makes the new Roomba iRobot’s first product that integrates with Apple’s ecosystem, allowing you to ask Siri to clean the room, manage the device in the Home app and use it in your custom scenes and automation.
