Google Maps for iPhone has removed the Go and Updates tabs for a cleaner look

Google Maps for iOS has gained improved navigation by dropping the Go and Updates tabs after the Android version did the same in July.

The user interface in Google Maps for iPhone and iPad has changed slightly. Having installing the latest Google Maps update from the App Store, I immediately noticed that the Go and Updates tab had been removed. The move has reduced the number of tabs from five to three, making it simpler to use the app.

At the same time, the Saved tab has been renamed “You.” The Explore and Contribute tabs have stayed intact. With this change, you now have the following three tabs in the app: “Explore,” “You” and “Contribute.” The same bottom bar redesign came to the Android edition of Google Maps in July, and now it’s available in the iOS and iPadOS version of the app, 9to5Google noted.

The Google Maps Go and Updates tabs are no more

This doesn’t mean you’ve lost functionality. For example, while the Go tab is no longer available, your saved locations are now found within the Saved section under the You tab. This includes your favorite eateries, coffee bars, gas stations, and public transit routes that were previously available underneath the Go tab.

Like before, you can pin locations and routes to the map for quick access. Choosing a saved place lets you quickly get directions, live traffic, departure and arrival times, ETAs and other useful stats without having to type in the full address.

Last but not least, the content previously housed under the removed Updates tab now lives under “Notifications” and “Messages” at the top of the You tab.

The new tab layout is live in Google Maps for iOS v6.129.1. If you prefer Google’s mapping service over Apple’s, you may want to learn how to send a place from the Google Maps web app on your computer to an iPhone or Android phone.

How to manually update Google Maps for iOS

iOS automatically installs app updates, but this can take days. To force a manual update, open the Google Maps App Store page on your iPhone or iPad and hit Update. If you don’t see the button, your installed copy is up to date.

To check the version number of the installed app, hit your profile picture (or access the side menu) in the app and choose Settings, then scroll to the bottom and select the About, terms & privacy option to view the build number under Version.
