It’s the weekend again, folks, and you know what that means: it’s time for another Apps of the Week roundup! This week we have some great picks for you, including a minimal theme maker for your home screen, an app for creating quick reminders, and an app that teaches you how to draw. And as always, we’ve selected a fun game for you to check out.

Dumb Phone

Turn your iPhone into a dumb phone. I know, it’s a terrible slogan, but that’s literally what this app does. Dumb Phone helps you create your very own minimalist phone on iOS. It does this by replacing bright, colorful app icons, notification badges, and anything else that might give you a dopamine hit when you look at your home screen. You can achieve a custom—almost themed—look by choosing a dark (or light) background, icons, and text, and then adding in various Dumb Phone widgets. You can even create multiple setups for work and leisure, so the apps you need are always one tap away. What a clever idea. If there are other apps that do this to this extent, I wasn’t aware of them.

Remind Me Faster

I usually try to avoid covering the same app twice, but given the novelty of this one and the fact that it’s been over five years since we last mentioned it, I figured it was okay to point to it again. Remind Me Faster helps make adding an alert or to-do list item to the stock Reminders app as quick as possible. Open the app and you are immediately typing—no wading through various lists, tags, or templates; just type in your reminder, select the date and time, tap add, and you are ready to start typing again. You can set date alerts using natural language like “Reply to Mike tomorrow 10am,” select lists by swiping, and the app supports URL schemes, alternative app icons, Share sheet extensions, and Lock Screen widgets. Sure, you can add reminders quickly with Siri, but sometimes speaking aloud to a hard-of-hearing AI assistant isn’t always convenient.

Simply Draw: Learn to Draw

This app is on version 1.2 and has over 28K ratings, if that tells you anything. Simply Draw is an app that—you guessed it—teaches you how to draw. You set up a customized learning journey to ensure you only draw what interests you, and then you follow along with easy-to-follow video tutorials made by professional artists and teachers. You can draw at your own time and pace, learn and master new skills like 3D objects and light source shading, and get feedback on your work. The idea here is that you are doing your drawing on paper, but I imagine you can use a secondary iOS device like an iPad or iPhone. There are monthly subscription plans that range from $9 per month to $120 per month, but if you can get past that, it’s an impressive and seemingly very helpful app for aspiring artists.

Royal Card Clash

Forget the first-person shooters and the MMORPGs; this week’s game is Royal Card Clash—a gentleman’s game. And by that I mean, like a good game of chess, played by a roaring fire, this is the type of game where you pour yourself a stiff drink, light a cigar, and turn on some smooth jazz. It’s a total reimagine of classic card games like Solitaire, where it’s just you and a deck of cards. The rules are simple to learn, but you get into pretty deep decision-making; you have to be as efficient as possible to break your enemies and achieve victory. Features include various difficulty levels to unlock, relaxing but catchy chip tune soundscape, and statistics and leaderboards to track. Sounds like the perfect Saturday night.
