Apple fixes Advanced Data Protection problems and squishes important bugs with iOS/iPadOS 17.6.1 and 16.7.10, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1 and Ventura 13.6.9
Apple has released iOS 17.6.1 and other software updates that bring security patches and bug fixes for the misbehaving Advanced Data Protection feature.
iOS 17.6.1 and iPadOS 17.6.1 bring “important bug fixes” while addressing an issue preventing toggling the Advanced Data Protection feature which enables encryption for Messages, Photos, and device backups in iCloud. You can install the iPhone and iPad updates via Settings > General > Software Update.
iOS and iPadOS 16.7.10 bring the same bug fixes to older iPhone models that cannot run iOS 17. macOS Sonoma 14.6.1 and macOS Ventura 13.6.9 also fixed an issue that prevented the enabling or disabling of Advanced Data Protection in addition to other “important bug fixes and security updates.” To install the updates on your Mac, open System Settings > General > Software Update.
What vulnerabilities do these updates patch, if any?
It remains to be seen if these updates patch any vulnerabilities. It doesn’t seem so because there are no published CVE entries. This often happens with updates that fix zero-day vulnerabilities. If that’s the case here, Apple will refresh its pages linked below once the updates have rolled out to most users.
