Apple confirms ChatGPT will be integrated with Siri by year end
Apple’s chief executive just confirmed its Siri voice assistant will pick up integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology by the end of 2024.
The first Apple Intelligence features are due alongside iOS 18.1 in October but without ChatGPT integration in Siri. When asked about this by an investor on a conference call, CEO Tim Cook called Apple Intelligence a staggered launch.
“We started with some features this week, but not the complete suite,” Cook said. “There are some languages beyond US English that will happen over the course of the year, and other features. ChatGPT will be integrated by the end of the calendar year.” At first, Cook added, will focus on “world knowledge.”
“Apple Intelligence is the on-device processing and private cloud compute. A lot of that will be things with a personal context. For world knowledge, we’re integrating with ChatGPT initially and that’ll be focused on world knowledge.”
“We’ll start with US English this fall and add more functionality, features and languages and regions coverage over the next year.” According to Cook, Apple trusts that Apple Intelligence is “a compelling upgrade” reason.
iOS 18.1 brings some Siri improvements
The system requirements for Apple Intelligence are pretty forgiving. Unless you have an iPhone 15 Pro or later or an iPad/Mac powered by the M1 or later Apple silicon chip, you’re out of luck.
Cook was also asked about Apple Intelligence requirements and whether any of these features need more capable hardware. “In terms of the requirements to run Apple Intelligence, there are system requirements and there are silicon requirements, so from an iPhone point of view, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will run Apple Intelligence and the successor products,” he responded.
“If you look at the Mac, it starts with the M-series of silicon that started in 2020, and the iPad is the same. The M series of silicon. There are system requirements and silicon requirements that go with each of those.”
The unforgiving Apple Intelligence requirements
iOS 18.1 brings some Siri improvements, like a revamped interface with a new glow animation when invoked, more natural conversations via large language models and the ability to type to Siri instead of speaking by double-tapping the Home indicator.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has stated that delayed Siri capabilities coming in the first half of 2025 include understanding what’s on the screen, making use of your on-device data to answer more personal questions like “When is Mom’s flight landing?” and controlling apps and devices to perform complex tasks on your behalf.
