Welcome back to the weekend everyone! It’s time for another Apps of the Week roundup! This week we have some great picks for you, including a powerful app that helps you control your screen time, a gift card exchange, and a universal client for all of your favorite non-Twitter social media apps. And as always, we’ve selected a great new game for you to check out.

Roots: Screen Time Control

I can’t tell you how hypocritical it feels when I post these screen-time-limiting apps among a list of other apps that require more screen time, but here we are. Roots helps you set boundaries with your phone and unlock more time for yourself. Features include daily limits for any app or website, scheduled downtime for things like “mindful mornings,” and Monk Mode, which completely blocks an app with no ability to unblock until the next day. Wait, can you even do that? You also have daily intentions, a personal balance score, and the ability to build streaks. Look, if you are at all in the market for an app like this, Roots seems worth checking out.

GCX – Discounted Gift Cards

This is actually a fairly old app, but its recent rebranding caught my attention, and I thought it was worth pointing out for those that aren’t aware of it. GCX, formerly Raise Marketplace, is a gift card exchange where you can purchase gift cards for many of your favorite retailers at a discount. You can also sell unused gift cards for a healthy chunk of what they are worth, scan in your own gift cards and use the app as a central digital wallet that can be used in-store or online, and get notified of special offers—there’s a lot going on here. Professional and/or thrifty shoppers, this app is for you.

Openvibe – Mastodon & Bluesky

Openvibe sounds like—well, never mind what it sounds like. But it doesn’t sound like a social media app, which is exactly what it is. It’s a universal client for all the major Twitter alternatives, such as Mastodon, Bluesky, Nostr, and Threads. Features include a unified timeline that spans across your accounts on all decentralized social networks, cross-platform sharing, easy migration of followers across platforms, and more. I think if you use one, or especially multiple, of these apps, Openvibe is worth checking out.

Numito

Are you looking for a challenging game that will test your math skills this weekend? No? Why not? Well, you should check out Numito anyway. It’s a minimal puzzle game that has you moving pieces around in order to create simple math equations that equal whatever target number you are given. You can choose between Basic, which gives you only one target number, multiple goal numbers, equal on both sides, or OnlyOne, which has only one solution. Look, I am probably the last person in the world that should be explaining or convincing you to play a math game, but again, here we are. Check out Numito this weekend.
