Non-working iPhone 16 “dummies” showcase new colors and vertical cameras

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus should be equipped with vertical cameras for spatial video recording and come in five less muted color finishes.

Four iPhone 16 dummy units facedown on white paper, showcasing new colors and vertical cameras.

Australian leaker Sonny Dickson has shared images of so-called dummy units of the base 6.1-inch iPhone 16 and 6.7-inch iPhone 16 Plus arriving this fall. They showcase the rumored colors for these base models: White, Black, Blue, Green and Pink.

Reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first called for these colorways back in May, with another source corroborating Kuo’s prediction. In comparison, the current iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models are offered in Black, Blue, Green, Pink and Yellow.

Will the iPhone 16 have less desaturated colors?

Don’t judge the final look and feel by these plastic mockups. It’s hard to tell how shiny or dull these colors will look like in real life because dummies don’t reflect Apple’s manufacturing precision. Be that as it may, it does appear as if Apple’s smartphone color palette for 2024 will be less desaturated.

That’s especially true for the boring iPhone Pro colors. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max could bring two new titanium finishes, but good luck distinguishing them with a naked eye. According to Kuo, they’re Black, White or Silver, Gray or Natural Titanium, and a new Rose color replacing the Blue Titanium option.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus should also get a RAM upgrade to 8 GB (the minimum amount of memory required to run Apple Intelligence), the Dynamic Island (previously exclusive to iPhone 15 Pros) and a dedicated Capture button for taking photos and shooting video.

Vertical dual-camera layout

The iPhone 16 lineup is expected to switch to vertically aligned cameras on the back so the two cameras are arranged horizontally when shooting in landscape mode. This will enable the non-Pro iPhone 16 models to shoot 3D stereoscopic video.
Spatial video capture is currently only possible with the iPhone 15 Pros, which have rearranged their triple camera layout so that the wide and ultra-wide cameras (required for spatial video capture) are rearranged horizontally when holding the device in landscape mode.

What are iPhone “dummy units”

iPhone “dummy units” are non-working handset mockups based on rumors and leaked specifications. People 3D print them (that’s why they look cheap, not premium) to visualize what an upcoming iPhone might look like and to earn money from going viral on social media.

These units are frequently created for companies that build iPhone cases and various accessories. While many branded case makers like Totallee obtain the exact physical dimensions of upcoming iPhones from their own source, they need dummy units to test how snugly their cases fit unreleased iPhones.
