Apple Photos on iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia will automatically recover your lost or damaged images and videos, saving them in a special album.

Any salvaged items can be found under Utilities > Recovered. From there, you can select one or more items and choose Permanently Delete or Restore to Library.

Don’t confuse this album with Recently Deleted, where your deleted images and videos are temporarily moved for 30 days before being permanently cleared.

Anyone can help shape the upcoming operating systems by installing public betas of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia and more on their devices via the Apple Beta Software Program. Joining is free, and you only need your regular Apple ID account.

What’s the Recovered album in the iPhone’s Photos app?

This special album only appears below the Utilities heading if the Photos app has managed to find lost or damaged images or videos on your device. If you don’t see it, no damaged media items have been found. An image can become damaged for various reasons, including corrupt databases.

Juli Clover, MacRumors:

With iOS 17.5.1 and iPadOS 17.5.1, there was a fix for an unusual bug related to a database corruption issue. After installing iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5, some users saw long-deleted images reappearing in their Photo Library. Apple later said this was due to a database corruption issue that had caused the photos to reappear even after being deleted.

You may want to leave your iPhone plugged into power with the Photos app running to finish scanning your library for lost or corrupt items.

The first scan will be automatically performed when you update to iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia as part of post-install processes.

iOS 18 redesigns the built-in Photos app

iOS 18 brings the most significant Photos redesign in years, infused with Apple Intelligence-backed features that curate the library on your behalf.
You’ll instantly notice a simplified grid view dominated by a carousel view of your favorite moments refreshed daily. This is followed by various themed collections that the Photos app has created by analyzing the contents of your library.

Of course, you can customize the Photos app by creating custom collections to organize your content how you like, then pin them to find them quicker.
