iOS 18: Apple Intelligence might even let you create playlist artwork

Apple Intelligence could enable you to quickly create custom artwork for an Apple Music playlist from scratch via the Image Playground generative AI feature in iOS 18.

Evidence of this feature, uncovered from the fourth beta of iOS 18 by 9to5Mac, suggests a new Create Image button will appear when editing a playlist.

Tapping it will launch Image Playground, an image-generation feature of Apple Intelligence, to let you create custom graphics for the playlist.

iOS 18: Apple Intelligence will let you create playlist artwork

In iOS 17.1 and later, you can change cover artwork for an Apple Music playlist by uploading a custom image or picking from a handful of Apple-provided styles that range from abstract geometric shapes to gradients.

The built-in art styles automatically inherit the color from the playlist’s first song and overlay the title in the top-right corner, but that gets old fast.

Creating the perfect cover art for a playlist sounds like another manual task AI is about to take over from humans, so I’m very excited about this feature.

What is Image Playground in iOS 18? How does it work?

Image Playground creates images from scratch based on descriptive prompts, and you can influence image creation by choosing from a range of concepts and selecting your desired art style (Animation, Illustration or Sketch).

The feature produces several versions of an image based on your parameters. Image generation runs entirely on-device, so you can experiment to your heart’s content without worrying about privacy. Image Playground will be available in several places when iOS 18 launches this fall, including the built-in Notes and Messages apps and third-party apps built with the new Image Playground API.
