The Apple TV+ streaming service might offer more movies in the future as Apple is reportedly talking with Hollywood studios about licensing their films.

Apple TV+ only offers original programming, but the company could boost the service by acquiring rights for flicks from major Hollywood studios.

Bloomberg reports that early discussions between Apple and Hollywood studio executives are underway. The goal is to bolster Apple TV+ at a time when new seasons of popular shows are overdue because the Writers Guild of America went on a four-month strike in 2023, which contributed to a dearth of new content.

Rumor: Apple TV+ could license Hollywood movies

“The iPhone maker has spoken to several of the largest studios about acquiring more programming from their libraries to offer customers both in the US and abroad,” the report reads.

Apple experimented with similar deals. Eagle-eyed readers may note that Apple TV+ offers a limited-time selection of older movies to stream for free each month. These movies are only available for a month before they’re removed from the service.

Apple appears to have been quietly building a back catalog of non-original content from Hollywood majors to make them available to watch for free on Apple TV+. The Bloomberg story could mean the effort took on renewed urgency.

I like that Apple TV+ hosts only original content, but it cannot effectively compete with Netflix and others without increasing the value of its offering. The easiest and quickest way to do that is by licensing popular movies from Hollywood majors.
