The ChatGPT desktop app for macOS has been available for some time, but that didn’t mean everybody could use it. In fact, the ChatGPT desktop app experience was very much a phased roll-out, which meant that despite being downloadable by anyone, only select users could sign in and use the service on the desktop, regardless of whether they already used the mobile app or not.

But in a highly anticipated move, that has officially changed as of Tuesday. In an announcement shared to the X (formerly Twitter) social media platform just this afternoon, OpenAI said that the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS would now be available for all users to download and use, free of cost and without any subscription.

Not only can use you use the prompt window to ask ChatGPT questions just as you could from the mobile app on your iPhone or iPad, but you can even use a built-in Option + Space shortcut to invoke easier access to talk about emails, screenshots, or anything else that happens to be present on your Mac’s screen at the time you use it.

You will be able to share screenshots and other files with the ChatGPT app for macOS to ask the software questions about those things. For example, uploading a screenshot of your code in Xcode means that you can ask ChatGPT how you can optimize your code. Likewise, you could upload a block of text and ask how it can be made more concise, or to change your tone. These are just a couple of examples.

Unfortunately, the ChatGPT macOS app doesn’t yet support voice, GPT 4.5, and other anticipated features, and it currently only supports Apple silicon-equipped Macs, which means Intel Mac users are being left in the dust. Support for Windows is expected to come later this year.

If you’re interested in giving the ChatGPT app for macOS a try for yourself, then you can download it for free from OpenAI’s website.

It’s worth noting that Apple is working closely with OpenAI for some of its features in macOS Sequoia, as well as iOS & iPadOS 18. Specifically, Siri queries that the Apple assistant can’t directly help you with can be routed through an AI engine such as ChatGPT for more personalized answers. Apple plans to support more AI engines in the future, such as Google’s GeminAI.
