iOS 18 enables call recording in the iPhone’s Phone app out of the box
With iOS 18, no third-party apps are required to record cellular phone calls on your iPhone, and Apple Intelligence provides automatic transcription and summary.
Apple Intelligence-powered transcriptions and summaries of audio recordings will be available in the Phone app with iOS 18 this fall. These improvements will enable you to record phone calls without having to use specialized third-party apps like Call Recorder Pro, TapeACall or Rev Voice Recorder that don’t always work well.
A Record button will appear on the screen during a live call, which you’ll hit to start recording. At the end of the call, Apple Intelligence will automatically transcribe the recorded call for you to read, and create a searchable summary. The audio recording is saved to the Notes app for future reference along with transcription.
Although Apple hasn’t discussed this in detail, the iOS 18 Preview page advertises the ability to record and transcribe a live call directly from the Phone app.
iOS 18 lets you record iPhone calls in the Phone app
To comply with consent laws, the Phone app wil warn both parties that the call is being recorded, ensuring mutual consent.
“When a recording is initiated while on a call, participants are automatically notified, and once the call ends, Apple Intelligence generates a summary to help recall key points,” according to a press release in the Apple Newsroom.
There are, however, some caveats to keep in mind.
What you need to record phone calls on your iPhone
Recording calls will support English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese and Portuguese at launch. Further restrictions apply because of the system requirements for Apple Intelligence.
For instance, your Siri and device language will both need to be set to US English, and you’ll need an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPad/Mac powered by the M1 chip or later.
Unless you meet those requirements, you won’t be able to record phone calls or use Apple Intelligence features like AI image creation, ChatGPT writing tools, etc.
