iOS 18: Add a credit or debit card to Apple Wallet by tapping it on the iPhone’s back (UPDATED)

iOS 18 brings a new Tap to Provision feature that removes any remaining friction when adding credit or debit cards to Apple Wallet on iPhone.
Tap to Provision is coming to the Wallet app with the release of iOS 18 this fall, Apple has confirmed. With the update installed, you can add an NFC-enabled credit or debit card to Wallet by tapping the card against the back of your iPhone.
Apple Wallet gaining Tap to Provision this fall
The Apple Newsroom announcement says Tap to Provision will only work with “eligible” cards. The company did not say which cars would be eligible, but you’re definitely going to need a credit or debit card with an embedded NFC chip for that.
For years now, the Wallet app has supported in-app provisioning for quickly adding cards from other apps to Wallet. The Revolut banking app supports this feature. I use Revolut daily, and adding Revolut cards to Wallet couldn’t be simpler—I just hit the “Add to Wallet” button in Revolut to bypass the manual process.
Visa, Mastercard, and other big players support push and in-app provisioning. But Tap to Provision promises to further streamline the card issuance process to digital wallets for the cardholder vs. manually adding cards from within Wallet.
Tap to Cash and other Wallet updates
Another new payment option coming this fall is Tap to Cash. With it, you can “pay someone back at dinner or buy something at a garage sale,” as Apple puts it, simply by holding your iPhones together without sharing phone numbers.
Other payment features in iOS 18 include revamped Wallet event tickets, using Apple Pay on third-party desktop browsers by scanning a QR code with your iPhone, and Wallet integration with bank rewards and installment payments.
Apple to open up NFC tech to EU developers
Contactless payments require an NFC chip in your iPhone. Apple has restricted the iPhone’s NFC to its own Wallet app and Apple Pay, but this could change soon as the company pledged to permit European developers to tap into the iPhone’s NFC.
This will enable third-party apps like PayPal to provide contactless payment features, albeit only in the EU markets. Reuters reported that antitrust regulators will approve Apple’s offer to open up the NFC chip technology.
