A cheaper Vision Pro might require an iPhone or Mac for processing power

A cheaper Vision Pro could use less sophisticated components and require a tethered iPhone or Mac to provide the required processing oomph.

A chapter Vision Pro is codenamed N107 internally, and early prototypes allegedly feature a narrower field of view than the Vision Pro, Mark Gurman wrote in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg.

Apple is “considering making the device reliant on a tethered Mac or iPhone,” he added. “That would let Apple save money on the processing power and components needed to make the Vision Pro a fully standalone product.”

The device is codenamed internally N107, with early prototypes having a narrower field of view than the Vision Pro. “And the company is considering making the device reliant on a tethered Mac or iPhone,” Gurman explains.

“That would let Apple save money on the processing power and components needed to make the Vision Pro a fully standalone product.”

Looking at the big picture, Gurman says Apple aims to turn the pricey headset into a multi-product business. The headset has so far been embraced by many Fortune 500 corporations to investigate how it could be used as an enterprise tool. Vision Pro is also popular in highly specialized verticals like remote surgery, advanced engineering and construction.

The product has only been available in the United States after debuting in January, but that will change soon. Later this month, the Vision Pro will launch in China, Hong Kong and Singapore. And in July, the headset will make landfall in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Germany, Canada and Australia.

A second-generation model in the works

The Information recently learned from its supply chain sources that Apple suspended the development of a successor to the Vision Pro to focus on a more affordable “Vision product.” But Gurman states in the newsletter that Apple planned to follow up on the inaugural model with a more affordable veison before the Vision Pro was first unveiled last year.

He also insists that work on a second-generation Vision Pro continues because Apple isn’t stupid to exit the premium headset market. It’ll take a bit longer to arrive though as Apple “shifted a planned 2025 release to the end of 2026 at the earliest.”

A second-generation Vision Pro (codenamed N109) resembles the current model but has a faster processor and improvements to external cameras. “Apple has also looked at ways to make the second version lighter and more comfortable,” he said.

How much should a cheaper Vision Pro cost?

Don’t expect a more affordable Vision Pro to undercut Meta’s headset. In Apple’s world, a cheap headset might easily mean a price range between $1,500-$2,500, which is still three times as much as rival headsets from Meta.

“It’s the most advanced piece of electronic equipment out there. It’s tomorrow’s engineering today,” Tim Cook said on Good Morning America justifying the price tag. “So you’re going to live in the future and you’re going to do it today.”
