The new iPad Pro has an extra spine to make it harder to bend

The M4 iPad Pro is Apple’s thinnest device yet but doesn’t bend any more easily than the previous models thanks to an extra spine which improves durability.
With the new iPad Air and Pro out the gate, some YouTubers have done what they always do: filming nonsensical stress tests that provide little value, if any.
JerryRigEverything, MobileReviewsEh and AppleTrack found out in their non-scientific “test” that the M4 iPad Pro is just as durable as its M2 predecessor.
These videos are made to capitalize on the 2018 iPad Pro “Bendgaste” controversy. That model did give in a little when you applied a decent amount of pressure due to its thinness, even though the effect was mostly imperceptible during everyday use.
I prayed for these pointless torture tests to stop, but they kept on coming. So here we are in 2024 with JerryRigEverything making a whole video to tell us that his M4 iPad Pro is 0.1 degrees off perfectly straight, less than he expected. And this “influencer” had to put his back in to break the tablet! How’s this normal use?
Surprise: The new iPad Pro bends until it breaks
AppleTrack was also impressed after its own torture tests came to a similar conclusion. “It is just stupid how strong this new iPad Pro is,” it said. “These new iPad Pros are going to broadly hold up even though they are ridiculously thin and the OLED display, especially the tandem design is crazy durable.”
MobileReviewsEh said his iPad Pro started bending after 70 pounds (about 32 kilograms) of pressure, the same as the previous model. Again, that’s not normal use, so data points like this have no actionable value for potential shoppers.
Soon after the 2018 iPad Pro came out, the “Bendgate” controversy erupted. Apple responded that a slight bend is caused when the plastic and metal components are cooling during manufacturing.
Apple added an extra spine to reduce bending
Apple is not stupid; it knew people would be trying to break the new iPads just to prove a point, so it reinforced the internal structure by adding an extra spine. 24 hours before the new iPad Pro started shipping, Apple sent its hardware engineering boss John Ternus to sit down with Arun Maini for a video chat.

At one point, Termus explained that the new iPads are equipped with a new metal cowling that helps dissipate heat and improve durability. This protective cover “effectively creates a central rib that runs through the whole thing and tremendously improves the stiffness of the products,” he explained.
