Rumor: Apple to launch AirTag 2 with enhanced location tracking in 2025
The AirTag 2 release date is tentatively set to mid-2025, but don’t expect many new features over the original besides enhanced location tracking capabilities.
The AirTag is Apple’s compact personal tracker which utilizes Bluetooth discovery and the Find My network. You can locate a misplaced personal item attached to an AirTag, like keys, on a map in the Find My app for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Web.
The accessory has been available since April 2021, with its successor now expected in mid-2025. In the latest edition of his PowerOn newsletter for Bloomberg, Mark Gurman wrote that the second-generation AirTag has been in the works.

The new version, code-named B589, is reportedly scheduled to arrive around the middle of next year. Gurman claims Apple is already “doing test runs with manufacturing partners in Asia.” Apple usually doesn’t start trial manufacturing 12 months in advance, so maybe the next AirTag will arrive this year?
At any rate, Gurman says the second-generation AirTag will be equipped with a better chip with improved location tracking. “Personally, I’d like a louder speaker, better battery life and a version optimized for wallets,” he wrote.
Tracking notifications across iPhone and Android
Personal item trackers from Apple, Pebblebee, Samsung, Tile, Chipolo and eufy Security will soon work better as Google and Apple have joined forces to enable support for cross-platform tracking notifications.
Google has begun rolling out its Find My Devices network, which supports tracking alerts on iOS and Android. Apple followed by releasing the iOS 17.5 update, enabling support for cross-platform tracking notifications on its end.
“Cross-platform tracking detection delivers notifications to users if a compatible Bluetooth tracker they do not own is moving with them, regardless of what operating system the device is paired with,” according to the iOS 17.5 release notes.
