Pixelmator Pro gains new AI powers for hiding backgrounds, masking and more

The best Photoshop alternative Pixelmator Pro has gotten even better with new AI features to hide backgrounds, create and refine masks, etc.
The more recent Pixelmator Pro app brought an AI-powered background removal tool that lets you non-destructively hide a photo’s background with a click. Refining selections with greater precision is another welcome improvement.
Creating and editing masks is now a completely new experience in Pixelmator Pro. To quickly add a mask, double-click a layer or selection mask. All mask editing features are now available from the bottom of the canvas.
The image editing software now supports vector masks. You can draw a vector mask or import one in the PDF, PSD, SVF, AI or EPS file format. Vector masks make it a cinch to quickly shape layers and create gradient masks.
Pixelmator Pro 3.6: Hiding backgrounds
You can seamlessly switch between bitmap and vector mask editing modes, so you can”paint on bitmap masks with brushes and quickly access the Shapes browser to swap between different vector shapes,” according to the Pixelmator blog.
Precise masks are also used for the new AI-powered Hide Background feature, accessible from the new Mask menu at the top of the layers sidebar or via Format > Mask > Hide Background. The AI algorithm detects a photo’s subject and hides the background while preserving fine details like hair or fur.
“Quickly mask image or video layers or convert selections into vector masks by double-clicking them with the Arrange tool selected,” the company writes in the update’s release notes. “Hold the Option key to add an inverted mask.”

You can add mask shapes from the Mask menu or draw your mask on the canvas. Another way to create a vector mask is by Command-dragging an existing shape layer onto the one you’d like to mask. If the shape has a gradient style applied, a gradient mask will be created.
You can switch between solid color and gradient masks and adjust gradient settings such as type, angle, direction, etc. To edit a vector mask, double-click it or hit the Return key. When exporting, vector masks preserve vector paths.
The Pixelmator team also makes other image editors, like Photomator, which was updated recently with a wholly redesigned export feature on the Mac, adding a dedicated export window with export preview, watermarks and Quick Look integration for instant full-size previews and image sharing.
