iOS 18 could bring iMessage text effects, but all I want is bold, italics and underline

iOS could post iMessage exchanges by implementing text effects that would let you animate individual words in a message.

Multiple sources told Joe Rossignol at MacRumors that these text effects “would allow you to add animate individual words within a message.”

Text effects would differ from the existing iMessage bubble effects and fullscreen animations that have been available for years in the Messages app.

iOS 18’s Messages app could bring iMessage text effects

“With the Messages app set to gain RCS support on iOS 18, it is possible the text effects will also work with green bubbles,” the author speculates. However, the current RCS implementation doesn’t support any text effects.
RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is a communication protocol aiming at replacing SMS that supports iMessage-like features such as typing indicators, read receipts, high-resolution media attachments, etc.

Apple said it would add support for RCS to the iPhone by the end of 2024. RCS will improve the messaging experience between iPhone and Android users. On iPhones, RCS chats will use green bubbles like SMS and MMS.

What about text styling options?

“Our hope is that Apple will also add bold, italics and underline formatting options alongside the text effects, but we have not confirmed that possibility,” Rossignol writes.
Actually, iMessage at one point did support basic text styling but was removed for whatever reason. I worked just like on WhatsApp. For example, you had to enclose the characters you wanted to italicize in the asterisk.

The Notes app and many other document-based apps preinstalled on the iPhone support bold, italics and underline formatting options via the bubble menu that appears when holding a text section.

Want iMessage text styling? Leave Apple feedback!

It would be nice to bring back basic text styling to iMessage with the bold, italics, underline and strikethrough formatting options.

Like many people, I myself prefer expressive communication with animations and emoji. But sometimes I just want to emphasize a thought by underlining words or express my anger by bolding something.

I think I’m going to write to Apple to request this feature, and you can do the same via apple.com/feedback.
