iOS 18 AI will allegedly create new emoji based on message content

Generative AI in iOS 18 will reportedly be able to automatically create new emoji beyond the existing catalog of expressive characters.

There’s not much information about how this feature is supposed to work, but iOS 18 will apparently create new emoji based on message content, Mark Gurman wrote in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg.

It’s unclear how this might work as all emoji available today are standardized through the Unicode Consortium (which recently unveiled 7 new emoji). We believe this feature will instead create a new Memoji based on the content of your messages.

iOS 18 AI could include on-the-fly contextual emoji creation

Mark Gurman, Bloomberg:

One standout feature will bring generative AI to emojis. The company is developing software that can create custom emojis on the fly, based on what users are texting. That means you’ll suddenly have an all-new emoji for any occasion, beyond the catalog of options that Apple currently offers on the iPhone and other devices.

The report details a few other AI features in iOS 18. Gurman explains that the Cupertino company will focus on practical features that will help people in their daily lives. iOS 18 should also enhance Home Screen customization with the ability to recolorize app icons and place them anywhere on the grid.

Other AI goodies in iOS 18

Contextual emoji creation is one of the few new rumored AI features coming to iPhone, iPad and Mac with iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 this fall.

Other capabilities include text summarization, Siri improvements, automatic playlist creation, voice memo transcription, suggested replies to emails and messages, enhanced Safari web search and Spotlight Search, recaps of missed notifications and a new version of Siri for Apple Watch optimized for “on-the-go tasks.”

Many of the features are believed to run entirely on-device, but those requiring more horsepower will be offloaded to the cloud. To that end, Apple is understood to have partnered with OpenAI but the company may also use Google’s Gemini technology to process requests that cannot be run on-device.
