iOS 16.4 expands the Voice Isolation feature to iPhone cellular calls
Apple’s iOS 16.4 software can make your voice sound clearer during cellular calls. Previously, it was limited to VoIP apps such as FaceTime and WhatsApp.

iOS 16.4 enables voice isolation for iPhone cellular calls
The Voice Isolation feature debuted on iOS 15 in 2021 but was limited to VoIP calls made via Wi-Fi or cellular on apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, etc. For those unfamiliar with the feature, it filters out background sounds to make your voice clearer.
Apple has now expanded the Voice Isolation mode to cellular calls made on your iPhone, but you’ll need iOS 16.4 or later (with the iOS 16.4 beta testing now ended, the software update should drop next week) to take advantage of it.
When iOS 16.4 is publicly available, and you’ve installed it by going to Settings → General → Software Update, you’ll be able to open the Control Center during a cellular call and touch the Mic Mode to select Voice Isolation from the menu.
What iPhone models support Voice Isolation?
A support document on Apple’s website explains that the Voice Isolation mode prioritizes your voice during a call while minimizing the sounds of traffic, dogs barking and other ambient noise around you.
The feature requires Apple’s A12 Bionic chip or later, meaning the second-generation iPhone SE, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and later support it.
It blocks background noises on your end—the other party must also turn on the Voice Isolation mode to make their voice sound clearer to you. Voice isolation is also available on 2018 Mac models and later with macOS 12 or newer.
