New Continuity Camera feature lets you use your iPhone camera for Mac video calls
One of the more eye-catching new features Apple has announced for macOS Ventura this morning is Continuity Camera. The feature gives Mac customers the ability to use their iPhone as a webcam, and unlocks new capabilities that were never possible before on a webcam.
The feature works like this: the Mac can automatically recognize and use the camera on iPhone when it is nearby—without the need to wake or select it—whether the phone is connected or wireless. It also includes support for Apple’s keystone camera features like Center Stage, Portrait mode and Studio Light—which beautifully illuminates a user’s face while dimming the background.
Plus, Continuity Camera taps into the Ultra Wide camera on iPhone to enable Desk View, which simultaneously shows the user’s face and an overhead view of their desk — great for creating DIY videos, showing off sketches over FaceTime, and more. That’s pretty crazy!
Continuity Camera works with virtually any video calling app. The clip you see in the photo above, which attaches the iPhone to the MacBook, is made by Belkin. And like the feature, the clip will be available later this year.
