A limited version of Adobe Photoshop for Apple Silicon Macs releases in beta

Photoshop maker Adobe has released a limited version of its popular image editor optimized for Apple Silicon M1-based Macs, the company announced in a blog post.

According to the company, this being an early version of Photoshop for Apple Silicon Macs means that some core features are missing, like content-aware fills, spot healing brushes, face detection and so forth. Other implemented features such as 3D functions behave erratically, exhibit bugs or show limitations.

Also, several features are “running slower on M1 native devices,” Adobe cautions, including Select Subject, Object Aware Matting, Object Selection and Preserve Details 2.0 Upscale. “These will be optimized over time,” the company has promised.

This is the same route that the company has followed when it released Photoshop for iPad, launching with a subset of the core features initially and adding missing features over time via app updates.

“We’ll be adding more features in the weeks to come,” Adobe noted.

Photoshop for Apple Silicon should drop early next year. Adobe is also working on an M1-optimized version of Lightroom for Mac, which will release in December.
