Go through these quick tips if the Apple Mail app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or iCloud is not categorizing your emails into Primary, Transactions, Updates, Promotions, and All Mail.<\/span><\/p>\n

Email categories keep your main inbox clean and organized, so you can focus on your primary (i.e., your most important) emails without having to wade through other spam or promotional messages.<\/p>\n

Update your device<\/h2>\n

iOS 18.2 and later on iPhone, and equivalent versions for iPad and Mac, support categorizing emails. But for the best experience, make sure your devices are running the latest versions of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26.<\/p>\n

Turn categories off and back on<\/h2>\n

The Apple Mail app lets you enable categories for all email accounts added to the device (All Inboxes) or just a selected inbox (like your iCloud, Gmail, or Outlook account).<\/p>\n

  1. Open the Mail app<\/strong> on your iPhone or iPad.<\/li>\n
  2. Go to All Inboxes or a particular account inbox.<\/li>\n
  3. Tap the three-dot menu icon<\/strong>, then select Categories<\/strong>. If it was already checked, select List View.<\/li>\n
  4. Now force-close and reopen the Mail app, or restart your device.<\/li>\n
  5. Return to the Mail app and turn on categories.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Click the three dots icon<\/strong> at the top, as shown in the screenshot below, and check\/uncheck Show Mail Categories<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Even the Apple Mail web app can sort your emails into Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions categories.<\/p>\n

    Visit icloud.com\/mail<\/a> and sign in with your Apple Account. In case your emails aren’t already categorized, click the settings icon<\/strong> at the top and check\/uncheck Show Categories<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Wait for a while and restart your device<\/h2>\n

    If you have a massive inbox, your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or iCloud may take a while (like 5 minutes or more) to work its magic and classify your emails into proper categories. So, give it some time.<\/p>\n

    In case you have already waited a while to no success, simply restart<\/a> your iPhone, iPad, or Mac and check if email categories appear. If they don’t, try these easy steps:<\/p>\n

    1. Open the Mail app and don’t force quit<\/a> it.<\/li>\n
    2. Make sure your iPhone or iPad is connected to Wi-Fi and leave it charging overnight.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Reset email categorization<\/h2>\n

      If the above problems haven’t helped, reset categorization by following these steps:<\/p>\n

      1)<\/strong> Visit icloud.com\/mail<\/a> and sign in.<\/p>\n

      2)<\/strong> Click the gear icon<\/strong> and select Settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      3)<\/strong> Go to the Categories<\/strong> section from the left sidebar.<\/p>\n

      4)<\/strong> Click Turn Off Categorization and Cleanup<\/strong> and confirm.<\/p>\n

      6)<\/strong> Follow the above steps again and Turn On Categorization<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      The Mail categories feature isn’t available in all countries and regions<\/h2>\n

      Apple has a nice iOS Feature Availability page<\/a> that shows exactly which countries and languages a particular service is available in. However, it doesn’t mention Mail categories, even though another Apple Support page confirms that this feature isn’t available in all countries and with all languages.<\/p>\n

      According to user reports, it seems like Mail categories will work only if your device language is set to English: like English (Australia), English (Canada), English (India), English (Ireland), English (New Zealand), English (Singapore), English (South Africa), English (UK), and English (U.S.).<\/p>\n

      Sign out of your account and sign back in<\/h2>\n

      In case the problem continues, sign out of the email accounts from the iOS or macOS Mail app and try turning on email categories once again.<\/p>\n

      iCloud email account<\/h3>\n

      1. Open iOS Settings<\/strong> or macOS System Settings<\/strong> and go to your Apple Account<\/strong> from the top.<\/li>\n
      2. Select iCloud<\/strong> > Mail<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      3. Turn off the sync switch.<\/li>\n
      4. Restart your device and open the Mail app. You won’t see your iCloud account there.<\/li>\n
      5. Now repeat steps 1 and 2, then turn the sync switch back on.<\/li>\n
      6. Re-open the Mail app and check if categories work.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Gmail, Outlook, or other email accounts<\/h3>\n

        You can turn off the Mail switch or completely delete and re-add the email account<\/a> by following these steps:<\/p>\n
