The process is simple:

You pick up an incoming call or wait for the other side to answer.

You then tap the More button, followed by Call Recording.

Unlike Android phones, iPhones annoyingly wait 3 seconds, then play an audio prompt, and finally start recording the call.

If this doesn’t work for you, here’s how to fix that.

Update your iPhone

Call recording in the Phone app is available on iOS 18 or later. But since it isn’t working for you, make sure to update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS 26.

Note: iPhone XR, XS, and later models support call recording. iPhone 11 and later support iOS 26.

Are you in an unsupported country?

Due to local laws and regulations, call recording on iPhone is not available in these countries:

Azerbaijan

Bahrain

Egypt

The European Union

Iran

Iraq

Jordan

Kuwait

Morocco

Nigeria

Oman

Pakistan

Qatar

Russia

Saudi Arabia

South Africa

Turkey

United Arab Emirates

Yemen

Turn on call recording

This feature is enabled by default. But if you don’t see the call recording option on the call screen, go to your iPhone Settings > Apps > Phone > Audio Call Recording and turn it on.

Don’t tap the ‘X’ close button to dismiss the audio prompt banner

After you initiate call recording, a thin banner appears on the call screen showing the “This call will be recorded” prompt.

There is a 3-second timer, after which the audio prompt mentioned plays so the other side knows you’re recording the call, and then the actual call recording starts.

Many people assume that tapping the ‘X’ close button on that banner will remove the 3-second wait and start recording the call immediately (after the audio prompt). But that’s actually not true.

Tapping the ‘X’ close button will cancel the call recording process. Of course, you can tap the More button again to reinitiate it.

Or, if you don’t want the other side to know you’re recording the call, this 3-second window lets you cancel the “This call will be recorded” audio message.

Reboot your iPhone

The call recording option may also not appear or fail to work due to temporary system glitches. Just turn your iPhone off and back on, or ask Siri to restart it. Then, make a call and try recording; it should work.

Try recording another phone call

In my two years of using this feature, I noticed only once that the call recording option was grayed out while I was talking to customer care of some delivery company whose name I don’t remember. After that call, I dialed my wife’s number, and the call recording worked. While not sure, it’s possible that a few calls may not be recorded. In this case, the best option is to open the Voice Memos app on your iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or other phone and record the call. Or, if you have an Android phone, call using that and record it.

In my opinion, the stock Android Phone app has a far superior call recorder compared to the iPhone. Here are a few reasons why:

Call recording on Android starts immediately; no 3-second waiting nonsense.

You have the option to play a small tone, instead of a full-blown “This call will be recorded” audio prompt.

You can set your Android phone to automatically record all calls from unknown numbers or automatically record calls from specific numbers.

Lock and unlock the Phone app

If you still can’t record calls, use these steps to lock and unlock the Phone app:

Touch and hold the Phone app icon on your iPhone Home Screen and tap Require Face ID > Require Face ID.

Restart your iPhone.

Repeat step 1, and this time tap Don’t Require Face ID, then confirm.

Now, make a call and try recording it again. It should work.

Free up space on your iPhone and iCloud account

Call recording may fail to start and save if you don’t have sufficient free space on your iPhone. So, delete some unneeded apps, photos, and videos to make space. Secondly, the call recording file is saved in the Notes app, and if you have insufficient iCloud storage, the recording may not save. So, free space there as well.

Reset all iPhone settings

Lastly, if nothing helps, consider resetting all iOS settings. This won’t delete apps, photos, or other personal data, but it will reset all settings to their defaults.

Also, check out: How to record FaceTime video calls

Source link: https://www.idownloadblog.com/2026/05/19/fix-iphone-call-recording/

Find out what to do if you don’t see the option to record phone calls on your iPhone, or if the record button is grayed out, or if it isn’t working at all. iPhone lets you record cellular phone calls and FaceTime audio calls without requiring additional apps or trickery.
