It&#8217;s a simple process, but in some cases, you may see random errors that prevent you from logging in. Go through these quick tips if you see \u201c<strong>An unknown error occurred<\/strong>,\u201d \u201c<strong>Error with Authentication<\/strong>,\u201d or another similar message when signing into the macOS Messages app with your Apple Account.<span id=\"more-1057459\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Make sure you&#8217;re entering the correct details<\/h2>\n<p>If you type your Apple Account email address and password incorrectly, the app should display the appropriate message. But in some cases, it will simply throw the generic \u201cAn unknown error occurred\u201d text in red color on the screen. Therefore, double-check that you&#8217;re entering the correct details. In case you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2019\/02\/06\/forgot-apple-id-password\/\">forgotten your Apple Account password<\/a>, reset it quickly from iOS Settings or macOS System Settings.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border aligncenter wp-image-1057461 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/media.idownloadblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Error-when-signing-in-to-Messages-on-Mac-with-Apple-Account.png\" alt=\"Error when signing in to Messages on Mac with Apple Account\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1326\" \/> <\/p>\n<h2>Retry after force-quitting the app or restarting your Mac<\/h2>\n<p>It can also happen that even though you&#8217;re doing everything right, the app keeps showing an error message because it&#8217;s still hooked to the previous issue. To fix this, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2015\/06\/30\/how-to-force-quit-mac-app\/\">force-quit the Messages app<\/a> by clicking the Apple icon \uf8ff in the top-left corner and selecting Force Quit. Then, open Messages and try signing in. It should go through successfully.<\/p>\n<h2>Check Apple&#8217;s system status and try again after a while<\/h2>\n<p>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/support\/systemstatus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple&#8217;s system status page<\/a> and make sure things like <strong>Apple Account<\/strong>, <strong>iCloud Account &amp; Sign In<\/strong>, and <strong>iMessage<\/strong> are available. If there is an outage, wait and retry after a while.<\/p>\n<h2>Update to the latest version of macOS<\/h2>\n<p>If your Mac is on an older version of macOS or running macOS beta, update to the most recent build available for your computer.<\/p>\n<h2>Delete system files related to Messages<\/h2>\n<p>In case you still see the \u201c<strong>An unknown error occurred<\/strong>\u201d or some other similar message, follow these steps to delete the related system files and start fresh. Since you&#8217;re already signed out, deleting these should not cause any concern. After you restart, macOS will recreate these necessary files.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2015\/03\/12\/library-folder-mac\/\">Go to your Mac&#8217;s hidden Library folder<\/a> by opening <strong>Finder<\/strong>, holding the <kbd>Option<\/kbd> key, and clicking <strong>Go<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Library<\/strong> from the top menu bar.<\/li>\n<li>Find and open the <strong>Messages<\/strong> folder. Then, select all files and folders here and move them to the Trash. You can also move them to some other folder for safekeeping.<\/li>\n<li>Important: Restart your Mac.<\/li>\n<li>Open the Messages app and retry signing in. It should work.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1057465\" src=\"https:\/\/media.idownloadblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Deleting-system-files-for-Messages-on-Mac.jpg\" alt=\"Deleting system files for Messages on Mac\" width=\"1840\" height=\"1140\" \/> <\/p>\n<h2>Sign out of your Apple Account and sign back in<\/h2>\n<p>In case you continue facing the sign-in problem even after following the above tips, consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2021\/12\/06\/how-to-sign-out-of-icloud-apple-id-sign-in-again\/\">signing out of your Apple Account in System Settings<\/a>. Then, restart your Mac and attempt signing in to Messages again.<\/p>\n<h2>If everything fails\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>Lastly, if nothing works for you, I recommend waiting a few hours or maybe a day and then retrying. If you have already done that and the problem exists, try these as a last resort. I have listed the easiest ones at the top.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2023\/02\/10\/how-to-add-user-account-mac\/\">Add a new user account to your Mac<\/a>, set it up, and try signing in to your Apple Account in the Messages app there.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2025\/06\/10\/install-macos-tahoe-on-another-partition\/\">Add another version of macOS to your computer<\/a> (leaving your current setup untouched) and try signing into Messages there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you&#8217;re successful, that means there is an issue with your particular user account or macOS installation. Retry all the above solutions again, especially the one where we talk about deleting all the Messages files and starting over.<\/p>\n<p>In case the problem continues, consider these two options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2021\/09\/02\/how-to-reinstall-macos-mac-without-losing-data\/\">Reinstall macOS<\/a> without deleting your existing data.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2025\/12\/17\/factory-reset-mac\/\">Factory reset your Mac<\/a> and set it up again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>One or a combination of the tips above should have solved the iMessage sign-in issue on your Mac.
