{"id":199812,"date":"2026-04-13T12:38:03","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T16:38:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/midatlanticconsulting.com\/blog\/?p=199812"},"modified":"2026-04-13T12:38:03","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T16:38:03","slug":"how-to-use-facetime-and-imessage-on-devices-with-the-same-apple-id","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/midatlanticconsulting.com\/blog\/2026\/04\/how-to-use-facetime-and-imessage-on-devices-with-the-same-apple-id\/","title":{"rendered":"How to use FaceTime and iMessage on devices with the same Apple ID"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In this quick tutorial, we show you how to make FaceTime calls and send iMessages to iPhones, iPads, and Macs that have the same Apple Account.<span id=\"more-1057223\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>You likely use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2021\/10\/20\/how-to-find-know-apple-id-iphone-ipad-mac\/\">your single Apple Account<\/a> (formerly called an <em>Apple ID<\/em>) across all your devices. And chances are they all share the same phone number and Apple Account email address to make and receive FaceTime calls and iMessage texts.<\/p>\n<p>But if you want to make a FaceTime call or send an iMessage to your own Apple device, like from your iPhone to an iPad or iMac at your house, you may notice that calls don&#8217;t go through because the caller and receiver are the same. Similarly, sending texts may appear one-sided. Here&#8217;s how to solve this and make calls and texts to your own Apple device signed in to your Apple Account.<\/p>\n<p>The overall process is simple:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You&#8217;ll add another email address or email aliases to your Apple Account.<\/li>\n<li>Then, register that email address or alias for FaceTime and iMessage on different devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here&#8217;s everything in just 5 easy steps.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 1: Get another email account or email alias<\/h2>\n<p>If you already have a second email address (iCloud, Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, or any other), then you can use that.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t want to create and manage yet another email account, I recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2018\/10\/24\/create-icloud-email-alias\/\" rel=\"noopener\">creating iCloud aliases<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2018\/12\/10\/create-gmail-email-alias\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Gmail aliases<\/a>. All emails sent to your alias email address will be forwarded automatically to your main email account.<\/p>\n<p>I have created 3 iCloud aliases (maximum allowed) on my Apple Account and use one each for FaceTime and iMessage on my iPad, Mac mini, and second MacBook. My iCloud aliases are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MySurnameX.<strong>iPad<\/strong>@icloud.com<\/li>\n<li>MySurnameX.<strong>Macmini<\/strong>@icloud.com<\/li>\n<li>MySurnameX.<strong>MacBookPro<\/strong>@icloud.com<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You&#8217;re, of course, free to add aliases as you seem fit.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 2: Add that email or alias to your Apple Account<\/h2>\n<p>Once you have your second email address or email alias in order, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2016\/04\/29\/add-new-email-to-imessage-in-ios\/\" rel=\"noopener\">add it to your Apple Account<\/a>. This change will reflect on all your Apple devices, since it&#8217;s done at the account level.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the iPhone or iPad <strong>Settings app<\/strong> or Mac&#8217;s <strong>System Settings<\/strong>. We&#8217;re using an iPhone to show these steps.<\/li>\n<li>Tap your <strong>Apple Account name<\/strong>, followed by <strong>Sign-In &amp; Security<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Add Email or Phone Number<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Now, tap <strong>Existing Email Address<\/strong>, type your second email address or alias address, and enter the code to authenticate and add it.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat these steps to add more email accounts or aliases if you have several Apple devices and want to have different FaceTime and Messages email accounts on them all.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1038311\" src=\"https:\/\/media.idownloadblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Adding-existing-email-address-to-Apple-Account-on-iPhone.png\" alt=\"Adding existing email address to Apple Account on iPhone\" width=\"1676\" height=\"1665\" \/> <\/p>\n<h2>Step 3: Register the new email address or alias for FaceTime and iMessage<\/h2>\n<p>You can now use the recently added email address or alias on one or more Apple devices.<\/p>\n<h3>iPhone or iPad<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the <strong>Settings app<\/strong>, tap <strong>Apps<\/strong> from the bottom, and select <strong>FaceTime<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2016\/04\/29\/add-new-email-to-imessage-in-ios\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Tap the new email address<\/a> under the \u201c<strong>You can be reached by FaceTime at<\/strong>\u201d heading. If you like, you can also uncheck other phone numbers and emails. You can also set the new email address as the Caller ID (i.e., this email will be used for FaceTime calls to new people).<\/li>\n<li>Next, select <strong>Messages<\/strong> in the list of apps, tap <strong>Send &amp; Receive<\/strong>, and check the new email address.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1038317\" src=\"https:\/\/media.idownloadblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Selecting-email-address-for-FaceTime-in-iPhone-settings.png\" alt=\"Selecting email address for FaceTime in iPhone settings\" width=\"1676\" height=\"1665\" \/> <\/p>\n<h3>Mac<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the <strong>FaceTime app<\/strong>, then click <strong>FaceTime<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Settings<\/strong> in the top menu bar.<\/li>\n<li>Check the new email address in the \u201c<strong>You can be reached by FaceTime at<\/strong>\u201d section.<\/li>\n<li>Next, open <strong>Messages<\/strong>, click <strong>Messages<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Settings<\/strong>, go to the <strong>iMessage<\/strong> tab, and check the new email address in the \u201c<strong>You can be reached for messages at<\/strong>\u201d section.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1038315\" src=\"https:\/\/media.idownloadblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Managing-email-address-and-phone-number-for-iMessage-on-Mac.png\" alt=\"Managing email address and phone number for iMessage on Mac\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1220\" \/> <\/p>\n<h2>Step 4: Save the new email address or alias as a contact<\/h2>\n<p>Make sure you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2020\/02\/13\/how-to-save-numbers-on-iphone-contacts\/\" rel=\"noopener\">save this new email address or iCloud alias as a new contact<\/a> (not an existing one).
