{"id":199742,"date":"2026-03-09T12:39:02","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T16:39:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/midatlanticconsulting.com\/blog\/?p=199742"},"modified":"2026-03-09T12:39:02","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T16:39:02","slug":"how-to-create-and-use-profiles-in-google-chrome-on-mac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/midatlanticconsulting.com\/blog\/2026\/03\/how-to-create-and-use-profiles-in-google-chrome-on-mac\/","title":{"rendered":"How to create and use profiles in Google Chrome on Mac"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Find out how to add a second, third, or more profiles to Google Chrome on your Mac to keep your internet accounts, browsing history, bookmarks, and everything else separate.<span id=\"more-1056247\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why I use Chrome profiles<\/h2>\n<p>Chrome is my default web browser on Mac, and I have created these profiles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>iDB<\/strong>: Signed in to my work email, and I use this profile for all office work.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personal Work<\/strong>: This is where I work on my main personal project.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shopping<\/strong>: I have signed in to Amazon and other such sites here. I have also installed a couple of price-tracking extensions here.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sensitive work<\/strong>: I usually access PayPal and my internet banking in Safari. But certain features, like my credit card points redemption site, don&#8217;t work properly in Safari for me. When that happens, I use this Chrome profile. I don&#8217;t use any extensions here, and I clear all browser data after every use.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other profiles<\/strong>: I also have a few different profiles for the remaining projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Having so many different profiles gives me the flexibility to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Log in to my different Google, YouTube, WordPress, social media, and other internet accounts.<\/li>\n<li>Have different quick website Shortcuts on the browser start page.<\/li>\n<li>See relevant bookmarks instead of everything. For example, bookmarks for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2022\/01\/04\/how-to-compress-image-mac\/\">image-compression sites<\/a> are only visible in my work profile, not in my shopping profile.<\/li>\n<li>Apply separate themes\/looks to my browser.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2023\/01\/10\/how-to-manage-chrome-extensions\/\">Use different extensions<\/a> or none at all.<\/li>\n<li>Customize each profile separately in a way that&#8217;s tailored to my different work and projects.<\/li>\n<li>Not feel hesitant before clearing browser data. When loading issues affect one or a few websites, the only way to fix them is by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2025\/12\/15\/delete-browsing-data-chrome-firefox\/\">clearing the history and other browser data<\/a>. One major downside to this is that it logs out of every account, and logging back in is a pain. Having different profiles and clearing the history of just one doesn&#8217;t affect the others.<\/li>\n<li>Save passwords separately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I have been using multiple profiles in Chrome for several years now. And when Apple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2023\/06\/19\/how-to-use-profiles-in-safari\/\">added this feature to Safari<\/a> in macOS Sonoma, I instantly created several profiles there as well (I have my parents, siblings, and my wife&#8217;s email accounts logged in to different Safari profiles).<\/p>\n<h2>Add a new profile to Google Chrome on Mac<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong> Open Chrome on your Mac.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2)<\/strong> Click <strong>Profiles<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Add Profile<\/strong> from the top menu bar. Or, click the <strong>three dots<\/strong> menu button in the top right corner, select your current profile name, and click <strong>Add New Profile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border aligncenter wp-image-1056250 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/media.idownloadblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Add-new-profile-option-in-Google-Chrome-on-Mac.jpg\" alt=\"Add new profile option in Google Chrome on Mac\" width=\"2940\" height=\"1912\" \/> <\/p>\n<p><strong>3)<\/strong> You can now set up your new Chrome Profile by signing in to your Google account. Or, if you don&#8217;t want to use a Google account for this profile, just click the \u201cStay signed out\u201d button.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border aligncenter wp-image-1056251 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/media.idownloadblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Set-up-your-new-Chrome-profile-on-Mac.jpg\" alt=\"Set up your new Chrome profile on Mac\" width=\"2940\" height=\"1912\" \/> <\/p>\n<p><strong>4)<\/strong> Now, give this profile a name, select a theme color, and click <strong>Done<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border aligncenter wp-image-1056252 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/media.idownloadblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Saving-new-profile-in-Google-Chrome-on-Mac.jpg\" alt=\"Saving new profile in Google Chrome on Mac\" width=\"2940\" height=\"1912\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>Repeat the above steps to add more profiles as needed.<\/p>\n<h2>Switch between your profiles<\/h2>\n<p>Once you have at least two browser profiles, click <strong>Profiles<\/strong> in the top menu bar and select the other one.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border aligncenter wp-image-1056253 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/media.idownloadblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Switching-to-another-profile-in-Chrome-on-Mac.jpg\" alt=\"Switching to another profile in Chrome on Mac\" width=\"1852\" height=\"726\" \/> <\/p>\n<h2>See or hide the profile selector when you open Chrome<\/h2>\n<p>Chrome lets you select a particular Chrome profile on every launch.<\/p>\n<p>Or, if it adds friction, you can also hide the selector screen. Here are the steps for both:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open Google Chrome, and if the selector is shown, uncheck the \u201c<strong>Show on startup<\/strong>\u201d option.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border aligncenter wp-image-1056254 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/media.idownloadblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Uncheck-Show-on-startup-in-Google-Chrome.jpg\" alt=\"Uncheck Show on startup in Google Chrome\" width=\"2940\" height=\"1912\" \/> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In case the browser is already open, click the <strong>three dots<\/strong> menu button in the top right, and select your <strong>current profile name<\/strong>, followed by <strong>Manage Chrome Profiles<\/strong>. Then, check or uncheck the \u201c<strong>Show on startup<\/strong>\u201d option.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border aligncenter wp-image-1056255 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/media.idownloadblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Manage-Chrome-Profiles-on-Mac.jpg\" alt=\"Manage Chrome Profiles on Mac\" width=\"2940\" height=\"1912\" \/> <\/p>\n<h2>Use different profiles at the same time<\/h2>\n<p>You can open multiple Google Chrome profiles in separate browser windows and use them simultaneously. Just remember that certain features like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2026\/01\/26\/split-view-google-chrome\/\">Chrome&#8217;s Split Screen<\/a> only work when you have two websites open in the same profile.<\/p>\n<h2>Customize your profile<\/h2>\n<p>Open Chrome and make sure you&#8217;re in the profile you want to customize. Then, click <strong>Profiles<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Edit<\/strong> from the top menu bar to change the name, theme color, and avatar.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border aligncenter wp-image-1056259 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/media.idownloadblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Customizing-Google-Chrome-profile.jpg\" alt=\"Customizing Google Chrome profile\" width=\"2940\" height=\"1912\" \/> <\/p>\n<h2>Delete a profile<\/h2>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t need to keep a profile, open the profile selector screen (three dots menu &gt; profile &gt; Manage Chrome Profile). Click the <strong>three dots<\/strong> icon for the profile you want to remove, then select <strong>Delete<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border aligncenter wp-image-1056257 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/media.idownloadblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Deleting-Google-Chrome-profile.jpg\" alt=\"Deleting Google Chrome profile\" width=\"2940\" height=\"1912\" \/> <\/p>\n<h2>Use the guest profile in Google Chrome<\/h2>\n<p>Guest profile in Chrome is fundamentally similar to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2023\/02\/10\/how-to-add-user-account-mac\/\">guest account mode in macOS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What you visit in Chrome&#8217;s guest profile is not saved to your browser history. And once you close guest mode, it removes cookies and traces of other local browsing data from your computer.
