This ensures a uniform texting experience and also lets you carry over old messages when you switch to a new iPhone without restoring a previous device backup.

Usually, this feature runs silently in the background and keeps backing up all your texts when your iPhone has sufficient battery and is connected to Wi-Fi.

But in some situations, this may pause intermittently, and you’ll then see a label at the top of the Messages app that says “Syncing with iCloud Paused.” In typical Apple fashion, tapping this message gives no extra information, nor does it take you to the right place in the Settings app to fix this issue. Plus, many other things, like downloading Apple Intelligence files, Siri voices, and Sound Recognition files, get stuck when the iPhone is not connected to Wi-Fi.

So, if your messages regularly fail to back up to iCloud, connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi and also plug it into a charger. I’d recommend you make it a habit to do this overnight, and all data will upload to iCloud without issues.

Enable Background App Refresh

If Background App Refresh is switched off, go to iOS Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn it on for both Wi-Fi and cellular data. If you have battery concerns, enable Background App Refresh only for Messages, and turn it off for everything else.

Free up iCloud space

Just like iCloud Photos, iCloud Notes, and several other things, Messages stored in iCloud count towards your available iCloud space.

In case your 5 GB free or paid iCloud+ storage is full, delete some files to make space. Then, retry backing up your messages to iCloud, and it will work.

Make sure your iPhone is not very hot

When your device is excessively hot, iOS will automatically limit the screen refresh rate and take other measures, such as suspending background sync, to keep the temperature under control. If your messages are not uploading to iCloud, touch your iPhone and make sure it isn’t too hot. If it is, take these steps to cool it down.

Restart your device and update it

System glitches or bugs in the initial builds of iOS 26 beta or non-beta may hinder messages from syncing properly to iCloud. Restart your iPhone or iPad, and if that doesn’t help, head to Settings > General > Software Update and install the most recent build of iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 available for your device.

Refresh Messages in iCloud

If the problem continues and your messages still don’t upload to iCloud, consider turning this feature off and back on.

Head to iOS Settings > Apple Account > iCloud > Messages.

Tap Sync Now and wait for it to complete. Then, turn off Use on this iPhone, and tap Disable and Download Messages if shown.

Restart your iPhone.

Return to Messages in iCloud settings and enable Use on this iPhone again.

Sign out of your Apple Account and sign back in

Lastly, if nothing works, sign out of your Apple Account, restart your iPhone, and then sign back in.
