I explained to her that this dot signifies she recently used the camera in the official Camera app or in another app like FaceTime or Instagram.

She swore she had not used any camera feature recently. But then she agreed that the camera may have opened partially by an accidental left swipe on the iOS Lock Screen.

She then asked whether there was a way to turn it off, since there’s already a camera button in the bottom-right corner of the Lock Screen. I showed her how to disable this swipe gesture in settings.

Some people have also asked online to block camera access on their locked iPhone so that no one in their family, office, or even in public places like security checkpoints can use their phone to take unwanted (and maybe harmful) pictures.

If you have similar concerns, you can prevent camera usage on your locked iPhone or iPad by following these tips.

Turn off the swipe-to-open camera feature on iOS Lock Screen

Make sure your iPhone or iPad is running the latest version of iOS 26 or iPadOS 26.

Open the Settings app and tap Camera.

Turn off the switch for Lock Screen Swipe to Open Camera.

You can no longer swipe right to left on the iPhone or iPad Lock Screen to open the camera. This also blocks the swipe-to-camera gesture when your device is unlocked, and you’re in the Notification Center.

Remove the camera button from the Lock Screen

iOS adds a camera button to the iPhone Lock Screen by default. If you don’t want it there, just edit the Lock Screen and remove it, or replace it with another feature.

Make sure the camera isn’t added to Control Center

Unless you have taken steps to block Control Center on the Lock Screen, anyone can go to it and tap the camera button if it has been added there. So, check to ensure the camera option isn’t added to Control Center or that it’s blocked on the Lock Screen.

Remove any other camera shortcuts

If you have added a custom camera shortcut widget to your iPhone or iPad Lock Screen, remove it from there.

Opening the camera will take time now!

Apple lets you open the camera on a locked iPhone, so you don’t fumble or miss capturing a precious moment. But after taking the steps above, you’ll need to unlock the device to use the camera, which isn’t always frictionless.

You also have the option to block the camera at all times

Finally, if you want to block your iPhone or iPad camera in both locked and unlocked modes, you can use Screen Time restrictions to do that. After this, the main Camera app, FaceTime, and other camera features of third-party apps will be unavailable.

Source link: https://www.idownloadblog.com/2026/01/22/block-camera-iphone-lock-screen/

Find out how to turn off the ‘swipe to open camera’ feature on Lock Screen and check out other ways to totally block camera access on your locked iPhone or iPad.
