Find out what to do if you don’t want the Apple Passwords app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac to suggest you create and use a strong password or give you the choice to save passwords.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is particularly helpful if you use a third-party password manager like 1Password or prefer managing your login credentials manually, like saving them in a locked note with a custom passcode<\/a> (though it’s not recommended).<\/p>\n

You must follow these steps individually on every iOS and macOS device where you don’t want to get password suggestions, like the one in the screenshot below.<\/p>\n

macOS<\/h2>\n

1)<\/strong> Open the Apple Passwords app<\/a> on your Mac.<\/p>\n

2)<\/strong> Click Passwords<\/strong> > Settings<\/strong> in the top menu bar, then authenticate with Touch ID or your computer password.<\/p>\n

\"Accessing <\/p>\n

3)<\/strong> Uncheck the box for Suggest Strong Password<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Stop <\/p>\n

You’ll no longer get suggestions in Safari to create a new password (and save it to the Passwords app) when you’re signing up for a new account on a website or changing the password of an existing website. But you should still see a tiny key icon<\/em> in the password field, which you can click to generate a new password (screenshot below).<\/p>\n

\"Clicking <\/p>\n

Note:<\/em> If you don’t want to see even the tiny key icon in the password field to use the Apple Passwords app, go to Mac’s Safari settings<\/strong> > AutoFill<\/strong> and uncheck the box for ‘User names and passwords<\/strong>.’<\/p>\n

\"Turn <\/p>\n

Here’s how it will look now with no suggestions from the Passwords app to create or autofill passwords:<\/p>\n

4)<\/strong> You can also set ‘Save passwords<\/strong>‘ in the Apple Passwords app settings to ‘Do Not Ask When Signing In<\/strong>.’ This should prevent the macOS Passwords app from prompting you to save a new password when you sign in to a website in Safari.<\/p>\n

5)<\/strong> And if you don’t want to use Passkeys and wish to stop Amazon and other websites that support passkeys from repeatedly asking you to set it up, uncheck the boxes for ‘Allow Automatic Passkey Upgrades<\/strong>‘ and ‘Allow Contacting Websites<\/strong>.’<\/p>\n

iOS<\/h2>\n

1)<\/strong> Open the Settings app<\/strong> on your iPhone or iPad and tap General<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

2)<\/strong> Tap AutoFill & Passwords<\/strong> and turn off Suggest Strong Passwords<\/strong> to stop seeing the ‘Use Strong Password?’ prompt in Safari.<\/p>\n

3)<\/strong> Next, you can also go to iOS Settings<\/strong> > Apps<\/strong> > Passwords<\/strong> and turn off the ‘Allow Automatic Passkey Upgrades<\/strong>‘ and ‘Allow Contacting Websites<\/strong>.’ What these options do is explained in the Mac section above.<\/p>\n
