In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2025\/09\/18\/new-macos-tahoe-features\/\">macOS Tahoe 26<\/a>, your Mac goes a step ahead and joins the hotspot automatically, provided you have set it up that way.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1051316\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1051316\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><\/figure>\n<h2><span id=\"When-your-Mac-will-auto-connect-to-personal-hotspots\">When your Mac will auto-connect to personal hotspots<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>You have set your Mac to do that (steps below).<\/li>\n<li>Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2023\/05\/19\/use-iphone-hotspot\/\">Personal Hotspot<\/a> are enabled on your or a family member&#8217;s nearby iPhone or cellular iPad. You can enable all these from the Settings app.<\/li>\n<li>Your iPhone or iPad has the same Apple Account as your Mac.<\/li>\n<li>In case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2020\/06\/08\/share-hotspot-iphone-family-sharing\/\">connecting to a family member&#8217;s iPhone or cellular iPad<\/a>, make sure that person is added to your family group.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span id=\"Allow-your-Mac-to-automatically-connect-to-personal-hotspots\">Allow your Mac to automatically connect to personal hotspots<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Open <strong>System Settings<\/strong> on your Mac running the latest version of macOS Tahoe 26.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Wi-Fi<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Scroll to the bottom and set \u201c<strong>Ask to join hotspots<\/strong>\u201d to <strong>Automatic<\/strong> in place of Never or Ask to Join.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1051317\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1051317\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><\/figure>\n<p>Going forward, your Mac will automatically connect to your iPhone or iPad&#8217;s cellular hotspot when no Wi-Fi is available and your iOS device has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Personal Hotspot enabled.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, if you set \u201cAsk to join hotspots\u201d to \u201cAsk to Join,\u201d you&#8217;ll get an alert instead. You can click the <strong>Options<\/strong> button and join this hotspot just once, or go with \u201cAutomatically Join\u201d to basically do the same thing as the steps above.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Allow-automatic-connection-to-a-family-members-hotspot\">Allow automatic connection to a family member&#8217;s hotspot<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to macOS Tahoe <strong>System Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Wi-Fi<\/strong> and choose <strong>Automatic<\/strong> for \u201c<strong>Ask to join hotspots<\/strong>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Open the <strong>Settings app<\/strong> on that family member&#8217;s iPhone or cellular iPad and tap <strong>Personal Hotspot<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Family Sharing<\/strong>. Select your name and set it to <strong>Automatic<\/strong> instead of Ask for Approval.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>From now on, your Mac will auto-join the hotspot of your family member&#8217;s iPhone or cellular iPad when Wi-Fi is unavailable, and your family member&#8217;s iOS device is nearby with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Personal Hotspot enabled.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Is-the-switch-seamless-and-without-connection-drop\">Is the switch seamless and without connection drop?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is a delay in automatically switching to an iPhone or iPad&#8217;s personal hotspot after your Mac disconnects from regular Wi-Fi. This process is not seamless, and you may experience an offline period of up to a minute or more. However, if you boot up your Mac and Wi-Fi is unavailable from the start, your computer may automatically connect to Personal Hotspot from the beginning.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Will-ongoing-downloads-fail-during-the-switch\">Will ongoing downloads fail during the switch?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is a moment of downtime, and so your active downloads will pause or stop. Try restarting your iOS device, updating it, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idownloadblog.com\/2023\/07\/28\/reset-network-settings-iphone-ipad-mac-apple-watch-apple-tv-vision-pro-tutorial\/\">resetting network settings<\/a>. This should make the alert go away.
